How to Make the Food System More Energy Efficient (preview)

Feature Articles | Energy & Sustainability Cover Image: January 2012 Scientific American MagazineSee Inside

Changes in agriculture, policy and personal behaviors can reduce the energy a nation uses to feed itself and the greenhouse gases it emits

Image: Photograph by Dan Saelinger

In Brief

  • About 10 percent of U.S. energy consumption is for raising, distributing, processing, preparing and preserving the plant and animal matter Americans eat.
  • Energy use can be cut by converting agricultural waste such as manure into power; implementing new, pilot-level farming techniques such as drip irrigation, no-till planting, laser-leveling of fields and GPS-driven machinery; reducing spoiled and wasted food, which amounts to 25 to 30 percent of all food produced; and eating less meat, which is energy-intensive to create.
  • The same steps would make our bodies, and our ecosystems, healthier.

For more than 50 years fossil fuels and fertilizers have been the key ingredients in much greater global food production and distribution. The food-energy relationship has been a good one, but it is now entering a new era. Food production is rising sharply, requiring more carbon-based fuels and nitrogen-based fertilizers, both of which exacerbate global warming, river and ocean pollution, and a host of other ills. At the same time, many nations are grappling with how to reduce energy demand, especially demand for fossil fuels.

Tourist center planned at sensitive Jerusalem site (AP)

JERUSALEM ? A hard-line Israeli group said Tuesday it was launching plans for a new tourist center at the site of a politically sensitive archaeological dig in a largely Arab neighborhood outside Jerusalem's Old City, drawing fire from Palestinian officials.

The project's sponsor, the Elad Foundation, said the new visitors center and parking garage will be built above a section of the excavation area known as the City of David, leaving the ruins below accessible. The foundation said no additional land beyond the current excavation site would be used and that construction, which must pass several zoning committees, was still several years away.

Israeli archaeologists at the City of David, named for the biblical monarch thought to have ruled from the spot 3,000 years ago, are investigating the oldest part of Jerusalem. Finds there linked to life and ritual in ancient Jerusalem regularly make international headlines, and the dig has become one of Jerusalem's most popular tourist attractions.

The site is just outside the Old City walls at the edge of the neighborhood of Silwan in east Jerusalem, the part of the city the Palestinian Authority says it wants as the capital of a hoped-for state.

Israeli construction in east Jerusalem is regularly subject to international criticism. Critics say the new plan will cement Israel's hold on Silwan and could destabilize the volatile neighborhood, where Palestinian residents clash on occasion with Jewish residents and police.

"This is dangerous and the Israeli government should understand that," said Adnan Husseini, the Palestinian Authority official responsible for Jerusalem.

Danny Seidemann, an expert on east Jerusalem who is critical of Israel's policies in the city, said the plan would result in "a pseudo-Biblical theme park which radically changes the fabric of an existing Palestinian neighborhood."

The Elad Foundation, which funds the dig, is associated with Israel's settlement movement and also brings Jewish families into Silwan, whose population is overwhelmingly Arab. The effort is intended to assert what the group sees as Israel's historic rights to the city and to keep it unified under Israeli control.

"The new center will serve tourists and visitors, Jews, Arabs, and anyone else coming to the City of David and the Western Wall," said Udi Ragones, a spokesman for the Elad Foundation.

A spokesman for Jerusalem City Hall, Stephan Miller, said the plans would be discussed in a committee Wednesday and would then be open to public objections as part of the standard zoning process. That process typically takes between several months and several years.

"The city of Jerusalem accords great importance to the development of the tourist and archaeology site in the City of David, where hundreds of thousands of visitors and tourists visit yearly," Miller said.

actually, the 5250 will almost definitely be powering the SGS3.

Exynos 4210, aka Orion, was said to be scheduled for 1H 2011 mass production when the announcement came in late 2010. All was revealed in MWC when the SGSII was unveiled. It was later rolled out worldwide by June/July, exactly on schedule.

The same thing is happening here. Announcement coming in late-2011, with the SGS3 as the release vehicle in Q2 2012.

Now, you might be thinking, what about the 4212 and the 4412? Sadly I cannot answer this. However I want to make clear that the 5250, with dual-A15s will certainly perform better than quad-A9s. Samsung knows this. Being Sammy's flagship, the SGS3 will never be forced to settle for an inferior SoC, especially since OMAP 5 and NovaThor will be shipping by then.

One will also note that the 4412 was never officially announced - and never will. It has no reason to exist. My theory is that the 4212 will go into a second-place Galaxy R II device.

Lastly I advise Phonearena to do a little more research before publishing silly speculation in future articles.

4. Hunt3rj2 posted on 2 hours ago 1 0

If the SGS3 is released with a 1.8 GHz quad-core Cortex A9, HTC and Motorola will undoubtedly destroy Samsung and be laughing all the way to the bank.

Unfortunately Samsung's Galaxy S is their crown jewel, and since they can make a massive amount of hardware in house, from SoC to RAM and flash NAND, it'll probably have a dual core Cortex A15 and postively destroy any Cortex A9 SoC and also probably edge out the Snapdragon S4.

6. wsker posted on 2 hours ago 2 7

Dual-core = FAIL.
Samsung has to be on the top by lifting up to quads ;),

Quad-core = Me buying it :)

Here we go again...more waiting and hype--just like the Nexus on Verizon with so many problems. Signal, battery, no hdmi, no external sd, no swype, 5.0 camera, multi-touch issues..As I've already said long ago..Samsung does not build a good phone! Yes, a beautiful, gorgeous display and that's about it. Samsung did not build any great feature phones--so they jumped on the road to smartphones---I know you all remember--The Rogue, The Glyde, The Omnia 1 and 2--just to name a few---catch my drift--what was great about those phones---Resets, multi-touch issues, signal issues ALL on previous phones ...I say they fix what they have on the market instead of launching all of these new series of phones!

23. SuperAndroidEvo posted on 19 min ago 1 1

I have a Samsung Galaxy Nexus & the signal issue is nonexistent. They are going to release an update to the software just so it shows more bars that is it. The signal for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus is one of the better ones for their whole 4G LTE line up. The battery issue is also nonexistent. It lasts about the same or even better than other 4G LTE phones. It kills my HTC Evo 3D 4G WiMAX by a long shot.

I can go on but there is no reason for it. Every phone sold always has issues. There is no phone that you can buy & not do an immediate update to fix any quirky bugs. Tech moves very very fasts & it's just the nature of the beast.

To go as far & say Samsung doesn't make a good phone is silly at best. Samsung would not have sold so many Galaxy S, Galaxy S II & whatever other phones they sell if they were not good devices. Over 30 million is no coincidence, it?s proof of a superior product.

A company who doesn't make good devices is LG. LG consistently makes subpar devices & the sales prove that. They don't sell well in the whole world, not just the U.S. So my point is that the masses do recognize poor products & good products. LG makes poor products thus it's poor sales.

Samsung indeed makes good products thus its great sales. I mean the facts are there. Samsung DOES make good products & there are numbers to back that up. Unless you think that over 30 million people are fooled into buying what you say are bad or not good products, you really can?t refute that Samsung does have great devices. Look at all the ratings they have received throughout the industry, they all have been stellar.

Families awarded $17.8 million in military jet crash

Fred Greaves / Reuters file

Firefighters battled flames after a military jet crashed into homes in the University City neighborhood of San Diego on Dec. 8, 2008.

By Michelle Wayland and Paul Krueger, NBC San Diego

SAN DIEGO ? Two families whose relatives were killed when a military jet crashed into a University City neighborhood in 2008 have been awarded almost $18 million for their loss. The amount is about one-third of the $56 million that the lawyers had hoped to recover for the family.

Young Mi Yoon, 36, her daughters Grace, 15 months, and Rachel, 2 months, and her mother, Suk Im Kim, 60, were killed Dec. 8, 2008, after one of the engines on an FA-18-D Hornet died as a student Marine pilot headed to MCAS Miramar.

On Wednesday, a judge ruled that Young Mi Yoon's husband, Don Yoon, should receive $9.6 million in compensation for the loss of his family. Sanhyum Lee, Suk Im Kim's husband, was awarded $3.7 million. Young Mi Yoon's three siblings were awarded $1.5 million.

Read the original story at NBC San Diego

The jet destroyed two homes, including the Yoons' house.?

The government admitted liability, but the two sides could not agree on how much money Don Yoon and Young Mi Moon's family should get for their loss.

A federal judge heard the evidence in an emotionally grueling two-day trial earlier this month, which included tearful testimony from the families.

Don Yoon described how it rained for just a few minutes the day of the funeral as his wife's casket was lowered into the ground. He thought the rain was his dead wife's tears, being shed for him.

In closing arguments, the families' attorney said Don Yoon should get a total of $27 million in emotional damages for the loss of his wife and two children.

Young Mi Yoon's father, Sanghyun Lee, should get $20.2 million, his lawyers argued. That figure included $230,000 in economic loss from his wife's death and $20 million in emotional damages.

The lawyers also asked Judge Jeffrey Miller to give Young Mi Yoon's three siblings $2.5 million apiece in emotional damages.

Attorney Brian Panish criticized the government for what he called its callousness in this case, telling Miller "there has been no evidence of repentance" by any government agency.

In their closing argument, government lawyers did not give the judge a counter-figure of what they thought would be a fair amount for emotional damages.

Instead, U.S. Justice Department attorney Bruce Ross urged Miller to be "fair and reasonable, without being excess or punitive," in his award to the family.

Don Yoon was awarded the following:

  • $1.2 million for the total wage loss, past and future, of wages that his wife would have earned.
  • $250,000 for the total loss of household services, past and future, that his wife would have provided.
  • $2 million for past non-economic damages resulting from the death of his wife.
  • $4 million for future non-economic damages resulting from the death of his wife.
  • $65,000 for the loss of personal property.
  • $300,000 for the past non-economic damages resulting from the loss of his daughter Grace Yoon.
  • $1 million for future non-economic damages resulting from the death of his daughter Grace Yoon.
  • $200,000 for past non-economic damages resulting from the death of his daughter Rachel Yoon.
  • $600,000 for future non-economic damages resulting from the death of his daughter Rachel Yoon.

Don Yoon's father in law, Sanhyum Lee, was awarded the following:

  • $230,000 for economic damages, past and future, resulting from the death of his wife, Seokim Kim-Lee.
  • $1 million for past non-economic damages, resulting from the death of Seokim Kim-Lee.
  • $2 million for future non-economic damages, resulting from the death of Seokim Kim-Lee.
  • $250,000 for past non-economic damages resulting from the death of his daughter, Young Mi Yoon.
  • $250,000 for future non-economic damages resulting from the death of his daughter, Young Mi Yoon.
  • $500,000 for past non-economic damages resulting from the death of Seokim Kim-Lee.

The rest of the money was divided among other family members.

Pakistani president warns top court in scandal (AP)

ISLAMABAD ? Pakistan's president on Tuesday warned the Supreme Court not to take action in violation of the constitution, referring to a judicial hearing into a secret memo seeking to rein in the powerful military, a scandal that threatens the Pakistani leader.

The political crisis revolves around a memo that was allegedly sent to Washington with President Asif Ali Zardari's support in May asking for help in stopping a supposed army coup following the U.S. raid that killed Osama bin Laden. Zardari has denied the allegations.

There is long-standing tension between the civilian government and the army because the military has staged a series of coups and ruled the country for much of its 64-year history.

The government has opposed the Supreme Court's decision to open a hearing into the scandal about a week ago, saying a judicial investigation was unnecessary because parliament was already looking into the matter. The powerful army, which denied it intended to carry out a coup and was enraged by the memo, supports the investigation.

The Supreme Court opened its hearing after receiving a petition to do so from a handful of opposition politicians ? a common practice in Pakistan.

Zardari warned Supreme Court Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry to respect the constitution, an indication he may be worried the judge will team up with the president's opponents to topple the government. Zardari has clashed with both Chaudhry and the army since he was elected in 2008.

"Anyone casting a bad eye intending to break up my federation, I will not let it break," Zardari told thousands of flag-waving supporters in southern Pakistan in a speech marking the fourth anniversary of the assassination of his wife, former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

Zardari did not say exactly what he meant by the Supreme Court respecting the constitution, or what he fears might be the result of the inquiry. Many analysts agree the president enjoys immunity from prosecution while in office

Zardari said earlier in the day that Pakistanis should pay tribute to his slain wife by guarding against anti-democratic conspiracies, an apparent reference to tensions over the memo scandal. He said his wife's death was also a conspiracy against Pakistani democracy.

"I therefore urge all the democratic forces and the patriotic Pakistanis to foil all conspiracies against democracy and democratic institutions," said Zardari in a statement sent to reporters.

The army-backed Supreme Court hearing sparked Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to say last week that a conspiracy was under way to topple the government. He did not specifically point to the military, but said the army must be answerable to the parliament and could not act as a "state within a state."

Gilani eventually backed away from his comments after army chief Gen. Pervez Ashfaq Kayani denied any intention to stage a coup and promised to support democracy. The prime minister on Monday denied reports he would replace Kayani or the army's intelligence chief, Lt. Gen. Shuja Pasha, to neutralize the threat to his government.

Former Pakistani ambassador to the U.S., Husain Haqqani, allegedly crafted the memo sent to Washington, which promised to replace Pakistan's national security hierarchy with people favorable to the U.S. in exchange for help in reining in the military. Haqqani has denied the allegations but resigned in the wake of the scandal.

The bin Laden operation angered Pakistani officials because they weren't told about it beforehand and humiliated the army because it was not able to stop the nighttime raid near Pakistan's equivalent of West Point.

Some analysts have speculated Haqqani himself manufactured the coup story in an attempt to increase civilian control over the army.

Obama, family attend Christmas church services

After spending a quiet Christmas morning with his family, President Barack Obama attended church services Sunday at a Marine base near his rented Hawaiian vacation home.

The Obamas made the short drive from their multimillion-dollar Kailua Beach house to the chapel at Marine Corps Base Hawaii. The president dressed casually in dark khaki pants and a short-sleeve blue shirt, and his wife and daughters donned sundresses for Christmas services on a bright and breezy day on the island of Oahu.

The Obamas have been spending the holiday with a small group of friends and family, including the president's sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, who lives in Hawaii with her family.

On Christmas Eve, the president made phone calls to 10 service members stationed around the world, two from each branch of the military. The White House said he thanked them for their service and the sacrifice of being away from their families at the holidays.

Obama has kept a low profile since arriving in Hawaii on Friday evening to start a vacation delayed by the stalemate in Washington over extending payroll tax cuts. He has no public events planned, and his only outings are expected to be to the golf course or to take his daughters for shave ice, a Hawaiian snow cone.

LiveLibs tools : self-updating code running on Windows Phone

    12/24/2011

    source:?http://livelibs.com/

    What's this LiveLibs thing?

In a nutshell, LiveLibs is a set of tools and technologies that allows you to have self-updating code running on Windows Phones.

?You don't have to wait for the whole Marketplace approval process to take place, or for users to go ahead and do the updates. Your apps will be automatically updated the next time they communicate with the LiveLibs website.

You can create "live" code libraries - Live Libs, in other words - for use by your own apps, or as public libs for anybody to use. That way others could benefit from your libs, too! And, of course, when you update a public lib, everyone else using it can automatically get the updated version.

Unfortunately, there is one major thing you need to be aware of: the self-updating code must be written in Ruby. Specifically, IronRuby. But Ruby is a hot language; you know you want to try it out. ?
