Plenty of people in community who deserve nomination

Topics:? australia day, mackay regional council

There’s more to Australia Day than sporting the national colours. It’s also about recognising the outstanding achievers in our community by nominating them for awards.
There?s more to Australia Day than sporting the national colours. It?s also about recognising the outstanding achievers in our community by nominating them for awards. Peter Holt

IF YOU know someone who deserves recognition for the good deeds they do, you need to do a good deed first and nominate them.

There's only about a week to go before Mackay Regional Council Australia Day award nominations close and in some categories the lack of entries is a real concern, according to corporate communications manager Ken Furdek.

"We often see a noticeable increase in nominations in the first week of the new year, and we're hoping that will be the case this year, but submissions for the two new categories are really concerning," Mr Furdek said.

"These are the South Sea Islander Achievement Award, which is a one-off for 2013 because it marks their 150 years of settlement, and the Environmental Achievement Award.

"The other area where we notoriously struggle for nominations is Sarina, and this happens every year.

"There are a lot of people in Sarina who do a lot of good things, and we need these worthy people to be nominated." Mr Furdek said people may have misconceptions about the type of people who could be nominated for an award.

"This is for people who do something for their community, people who do good deeds, and that can be mowing a neighbour's lawn every week.

"They don't need to be outstanding achievers," Mr Furdek said.

The 2012 Young Citizen of the Year, Cale Hutchins, also is encouraging people to put in nominations.

"Come hell or high water the people of Mackay always chip in," Mr Hutchins said.

"We have some real community heroes and fantastic volunteers out there that deserve recognition, even though they don't do these things for rewards."

doomddom: Longterm Engagement Can Lead to Longterm ...

So with the TV series of ?Marrying the Game? ending, I started thinking about long-term engagements and I wondered why people stay engaged for long periods of time. No one should rush to propose but once you?re engaged, why lag?

The average engagement period in this country is between 1-1 1/2 years. What in the world takes so long to tie the knot? Sure, your dream wedding venue might be booked, you need to save money or other things come up but really ? a year and a half engagement? It seems to me that the longer you take to plan the wedding, the more expensive it becomes. I know from personal experience the more time you give me to plan an event, the more things I?ll find to spend money on. Anyone who is engaged for longer than a year must not want to get married. If you are spending more time fussing over having the perfect venue or the cost of the wedding, than you are focusing on the wrong things.

But getting back to my point?on the television show ?Marrying the Game?, the couple Tiffney and Jayceon were engaged to be married after dating on & off for 8 years. On the show, there were some issues that Tiffney felt needed to be addressed before walking down the aisle but at the end of the series the future of their relationship was unclear. It?s one thing to date for years & years on end but after breaking off an engagement there is no point in maintaining that relationship even with the purpose of ?working on things?. Why call off an engagement unless you?re ready to call off the relationship?? Even if you think that your situation will change with time, people don?t change.

I think that long term engagements are ridiculous: Are you really hoping that your relationship will improve because you?ve changed the date of your wedding?

Set Up and Get to Know Your New iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Set Up and Get to Know Your New iPhone, iPad, or iPod touchYou've just been given an iDevice: a magical entity that bestows the gift of more apps than you can fathom. We'll help you make sense of it all with some great apps, tips, and tricks for your shiny new Apple toy.

Before you dive in, here are a few things you should do with your new iDevice first:

  • Update to the Lastest Version of iOS: There's a decent chance your new iDevice isn't running the latest version of iOS, even if it's just a very minor upgrade that's necessary. Before you sync for the first time, check for updates in iTunes or in your iDevice's Settings app, if your device is running iOS 6.0.1. If there's an update available, iTunes (or your phone) should tell you automatically but it's always good to double check. It's okay to update now that Google Maps is available.
  • Get to Know iOS 6: Once you've updated, you ought to know what you're in for. We can teach you everything you need to know. Our guide features a rundown of new features, in-depth looks at how to use the most popular ones, and answers to common questions about the mobile operating system.
  • Sign Up For Free Find My iPhone: You don't need to pay to use Apple's great Find My iPhone app. Just download it from the iTunes App Store and follow the signup instructions. You'll need to create a MobileMe account to get it to work but you will not have to pay for it. Once you're all set up, you'll be able to find your lost or stolen iPhone much more easily.
  • Install Google Maps - When Apple released iOS 6, everyone complained about the problems with their new Maps app?and for good reason. Fortunately, Google came to the rescue and released Google Maps with turn-by-turn navigation. Do yourself a favor and install it, then learn how to integrate it with Siri.
  • Organize Your Home Screen - When you start downloading a bunch of apps, your home screen is going to get cluttered very quickly. Stay ahead of the game and start organizing. As you download apps it'll be easier to keep track of where every app is and will be stored. Check out these reader tips for some ideas.

Download Some Killer Apps

One of the iPhones primary draws is the high quality of apps in the iTunes App Store. Here are some app suggestions to get you started.

Supercharge Your iPhone

There's a wide world of fun beyond apps. Check out these posts to learn all about the awesome things you can do to supercharge your iPhone's capabilities.

  • How to Break Down the Barrier Between Your iPhone and Computer: Your iOS device is a killer pocketable computer; your desktop is more powerful with a bigger screen. They need to play better together. Here's how to break down the barrier between the two and shuttle text, files, media, and more seamlessly between your desktop and iPhone.
  • How to Create a Visual Speed Dial Folder on Your iPhone: Visual speed dial is a nice idea, but when you have to launch a separate app to make a phone call it's a little annoying. Here are two ways to add visual speed dial to your home screen.
  • Top 10 Handy iOS Tweaks That Don't Require Jailbreaking: Jailbreaking your iPhone has a ton of benefits that give you actual control over your device-but it isn't always possible. If you're tired of waiting for the next version of iOS to be jailbroken, check out these tweaks and customizations you can make whether you're jailbroken or not.
  • Turn Your Smartphone Camera into a Pocketable Photographic Memory: Several apps exist to help you remember the many things you'd otherwise forget, but perhaps none are quite as useful and efficient as your camera. Typing takes time. napping a photo only takes a moment, and there are so many ways you can remind yourself better with nothing but a picture.
  • How to Turn Your Phone Into a Mind-Reading Personal Assistant: Smartphones, despite their name, are actually pretty dumb. They only do what you tell them to, and constantly inputting information can get tedious. However, with a few apps, you can not only make your phone smarter, but turn it into a mind-reading personal assistant that lets you know of important information as you need it: like traffic for your commute, a reminder to pick up milk as you pass the grocery store, and even automatic text messages to your friends when you're driving to meet them. Here's how to do it.
  • Make Your Smartphone's Ringtones and Alerts Actually Useful and Informative?: Don't settle for the same ringtone for every contact and every app. Make your tones actually useful so you know what kind of notification you're getting without the need to look at the screen.

  • How to Migrate All Your Data to iCloud from Google with Minimal Fuss: While most of us use Gmail for all our cloud computing needs, Apple's iCloud actually has some really nice things going for it-especially if you're a heavy Mac and iOS user. I've walked through why you might want to switch from Google's apps to iCloud, so whether you're migrating all your data over or just a few choice items, here's how to move from Google to iCloud without losing any of your existing email messages, contacts, calendars, and documents.
  • How to Turn Your iPod touch into an iPhone: 4G Edition: The latest iPhone and iPod touch are nearly identical devices on the inside, ignoring the pesky reality that the latter isn't a phone. We can fix that. Here's how to turn your iPod touch into a viable (and cheaper) iPhone alternative out of the box.
  • How to Google-ify Your iPhone: Got Android envy? Just wish Apple handled sync, the web, and openness a bit better? You can't have it all, but if you want to bring more Google paradigms to your iPhone, here's how to do it.
  • How to Make Music in GarageBand with iOS: Want to lay down some tracks but all you've got is your iOS device and a Mac? With an OpenSound Control (OSC) app on your iPhone and server on your Mac you can record a virtual keyboard over Wi-Fi.

Fix Common Problems

Set Up and Get to Know Your New iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  • How to Stop Your Smartphone from Secretly Wasting Data in the Background: Unlimited data plans are an endangered species nowadays, so most of us have to watch our limits in order to avoid excess charges on our bill. That's easy enough when we know how much cellular data we're using on our smartphones, but becomes problematic when our smartphones eat up our precious megabytes in the background. This doesn't just happen on Android, but iPhone, too. Here's how to stop it.
  • How to Improve Your iPhone's Battery Life: If you're looking to improve your iPhone's daily lifespan, we've got a few tips that can help you squeeze a little more juice out of your iDevice.
  • Fill Out Your Address Book to Make Siri Work Better: Out of the box Siri can do a few common things, but it struggles when you try to get too complicated with it. GigaOM offers up a few clever address book customizations to make Siri work more naturally.
  • How to Copy Music from Your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to Your Computer for Free: Apple, true to form, makes it simple to put media and files on your iDevice but the road really only goes one way. It can be pretty difficult to copy anything (or everything) back to your computer without a lot of trouble and sacrifice, but it's even harder to find a good, free solution to that problem amongst the many choices available. You could spend the better part of your holiday sifting through your options, or you could just read this guide instead.
  • How to Sync Documents and Other Files to Your iPhone or iPad Without iTunes: If you use a word processor, comic book or PDF reader, video player, or other app that requires syncing files through iTunes, you know how slow and awful it can be. Here's a simple, fast alternative.
  • How to Encode Video for All Your Mobile Devices: With H.264 solidly planted as the codec of choice for just about every mobile device, we've come to a point where you can encode a video once and play it back on pretty much anything.
  • Printopia Enables iOS-to-Mac AirPrint Support Hack-Free, Adds Virtual Printers: You could use AirPrint Hacktivator (or do it manually) to add AirPrint support to your Mac, but if you don't want to modify your system files and would like virtual printers, you should check out Printopia.
  • How to Open Compressed Files on Your iOS Device: iOS does pretty well with handling various file types, but when it comes to compressed files you run into problems. Fortunately, with the aid of a file browsing app you'll be able to view compressed files easily.

Two N.Y. firefighters shot dead in ambush: police

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A gunman who spent 17 years in prison for murder ambushed and killed two volunteer firefighters and wounded two others on Monday near Rochester, New York, as they responded to a house fire he deliberately set, police said.

William Spangler, 62, shot and killed himself after a gunfight with a police officer in Webster, a Rochester suburb, Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering said.

"It was a trap set by Mr. Spangler, who laid in wait and shot first responders," Pickering told a news conference.

Separately, a police officer in Wisconsin and another in Texas were shot and killed on Monday, according to police and media reports.

The attacks on first responders came 10 days after one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history that left 20 students and six adults dead at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut and intensified the debate about gun control in the United States.

Spangler was convicted of manslaughter in 1981 for beating his 92-year-old grandmother to death with a hammer, according to New York State Department of Corrections records, and after prison he spent eight years on parole.

"We don't have an easy reason" for the attack on the firefighters, Pickering said, "but just looking at the history ... obviously this was an individual with a lot of problems."

Spangler opened fire around 5:45 a.m. after two of the firefighters arrived at the house in a fire truck and two others responded in their own cars, Pickering said.

Pickering appeared to wipe tears from his eyes at a news conference earlier on Monday when he identified the dead firefighters as Lieutenant Michael Chiapperini and Tomasz Kaczowka. Chiapperini was also a police lieutenant.

The injured firefighters, one of whom was in critical condition, were identified as Joseph Hofsetter and Theodore Scardino. Off-duty Police Officer John Ritter was hit by gunfire as he drove past the scene.

Pickering said police had found several types of weapons, including a rifle used to shoot the firefighters. As a convicted felon it was illegal for Spangler to own guns.

Police had not had any contact with Spangler in the "recent past," Pickering said.

Four houses were destroyed by the fire and four were damaged, Pickering said.

COPS TARGETED

Police Officer Jennifer Sebena, 30, was found dead on Monday in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin, suburb of Wauwatosa, police said.

Sebena was on patrol between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. and wearing body armor when she was shot several times, police said. She was found by another officer after she did not respond to calls from the police dispatcher.

In Houston, Texas, an officer with the Bellaire Police Department died after a shootout at around 9 a.m. and a bystander was also killed, according to local media reports.

A spokesperson for the Houston Police Department was not immediately available for comment. A police officer answering the telephone confirmed media reports but declined further comment. A suspect was in the hospital, according to reports.

Before Monday's killings, the Washington-based National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund reported that 125 federal, state and local officers had died in the line of duty this year.

Forty-seven deaths were firearms-related, 50 were from traffic-related incidents, and 28 were from other causes, it said.

Analysis: Egypt's Islamists tighten grip on power

CAIRO (AP) ? With the passage of a divisive constitution, Egypt's Islamist leadership has secured its tightest grip on power since Hosni Mubarak's ouster nearly two years ago and laid the foundation for legislation to create a more religious state.

The opposition's response ? a vow to keep fighting the charter and the program of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi ? ensured that the turmoil of the past two years will not end as many, especially the tens of millions of poor craving stability, had fervently hoped.

"The referendum is not the end game. It is only a battle in this long struggle for the future of Egypt," the opposition National Salvation Front said in a strongly worded statement on Sunday.

"We will not allow a change to the identity of Egypt or the return of the age of tyranny," added the front, which claims the new constitution seeks to enshrine Islamic rule in Egypt and accuses the Islamists of trying to monopolize power.

Critics say the new constitution does not sufficiently protect the rights of women and minority groups and empowers Muslim clerics by giving them a say over legislation. Some articles were also seen as tailored to get rid of Islamists' enemies and undermine the freedom of labor unions.

Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's most powerful political organization in the post-Mubarak era, claimed early Sunday that the charter it had backed was approved in the two-stage vote with a 64 percent "yes" vote overall. Though official results will not be announced until Monday, there is little doubt they will confirm the passage.

Once the official result is out, Morsi is expected to call for a new election of parliament's lawmaking lower house within two months.

And if all of the elections since Mubarak's February 2011 ouster are any predictor, Islamists will again emerge dominant. In the last parliamentary vote in late 2011, the Muslim Brotherhood and its allies the Salafis ? ultraconservative Islamists ? won about 70 percent of seats.

If Islamists win the overwhelming majority again, there is nothing to stop their lawmakers from legislating in support of their longtime goal of turning Egypt into an Islamic state. The Salafis will likely seek to enlist the support of the less radical Brotherhood for legislation that would nudge Egypt closer to a religious state.

Khalil el-Anani, a British-based expert on Islamic groups, said the Salafis are likely to insist that every piece of legislation conforms with Islamic Shariah law, especially with regard to questions of morality, culture, personal freedoms and the nation's identity.

"The Salafis will want the Brotherhood to reward them for their campaigning for the 'yes' vote," said el-Anani. "The Brotherhood, meanwhile, will want to rebuild their image as a credible democratic group after a period in which it seemed in complete alignment with the Salafis."

The Islamists could also move early to pass laws restricting vibrant and outspoken privately owned media organizations that have flourished since the uprising and reported critically on Morsi and the Brotherhood.

Egypt analyst Michael W. Hanna said, however, that enduring political tensions will make it difficult for the Islamists to push ahead with any major or sensitive legislation.

"There will be a huge domestic backlash to any unpopular legislation, especially when it comes to the economy or the media," said Hanna of New York's Century Foundation.

Until the lower house is elected and seated, parliament's upper chamber, the Shura Council, will temporarily assume legislative powers and may give priority to more pressing issues.

After the opposition brought hundreds of thousands of protesters to the streets in the past four weeks, including tens of thousands outside Morsi's presidential palace in Cairo, the Shura Council is expected to hurriedly debate and vote on a legislation that would place tight restrictions on the right to demonstrate.

More serious challenges to Morsi's leadership may lie ahead. The millions who voted "yes" for the constitution are hoping for stability, jobs and business opportunities that may be slow in coming.

The president will soon have to introduce painful economic reforms to salvage a deal with the International Monetary Fund for a $4.8 billion loan that was delayed at Egypt's request because of the political turmoil of the past month.

A glimpse of what may be in store on that front emerged Sunday after Prime Minister Hesham Knadil met with the Cabinet's economic team.

"The current financial and economic situation is in grave danger," said Cabinet spokesman Alaa el-Hadidy. "Leaving things the way they are is not something we can afford to do," he said, hinting at the necessity of structural reforms. These will include price and tax hikes as well as lifting subsidies on fuel.

Morsi recently rescinded a package of price and tax hikes hours after he decreed them, saying he did not want to burden poor Egyptians with a higher cost of living. But economists say it is only a question of time before the package is re-introduced.

With foreign currency reserves around half of what they were two years ago and tourism revenues hard hit by resurgent political turmoil, the economy has been in a free-fall for months. Deepening the nation's economic plight is the seemingly endless series of strikes and demands for salary increases and better benefits.

Price hikes, warn many analysts, could prove to be the last straw for the nearly half of Egypt's 85 million people who live around the poverty line of surviving on $2 a day.

Many Egyptians want to see Morsi's government moving aggressively to tackle the nation's pressing problems such as security and reviving the vital tourism sector.

"We want factories to work again so we can find jobs here instead of traveling abroad to find work," said Mohammed Sweilam, a metal worker who spent seven years working in oil-rich Saudi Arabia. "When stability prevails, I will consider coming home to stay. Let us give the Brotherhood a chance. We owe them this," he said as he waited in line on Saturday to cast his vote in the town of El-Saf in Cairo's neighboring Giza province.

Another pressing issue for the new legislators may be the anti-Islamist editorial policy of the independent media, particularly privately owned TV networks whose political talk shows are watched nightly by millions and shape public perceptions.

Already, Morsi's allies have been filing numerous complaints against media celebrities who criticize or mock the president and the Brotherhood, including hosts of satirical shows and newspaper columnists. Several of them are on trial or being investigated on charges of "insulting" the president or undermining national security.

Since Morsi took office nearly six months ago, Brotherhood members or sympathizers have been named editors of most of the roughly 50 state-owned publications. The powerful information minister is a prominent Brotherhood leader.

A recent court ruling also shut down a TV network whose owner is a harsh critic of Morsi. Salafis who support Morsi have been staging a sit-in outside a media complex in Cairo for weeks to protest against what they say is the anti-Islamist policies of private TV networks housed there.

The constitutional crisis has re-energized and united the once-fractured opposition, turning it into a force to be reckoned with in the fight over Egypt's future. In a sign of its newly found strength, the National Salvation Front, the main opposition group, on Sunday scornfully rejected a Brotherhood invitation for dialogue.

The opposition has dismissed the constitution as the fruition of an illegitimate process.

The low turnout for the referendum ? 32 percent of the more than 51 million eligible voters, or 20 percent of Egypt's 85 million people, according to unofficial results ? has shown the limitations Islamists face in marketing an Islamic state in a nation still largely loyal to secular traditions.

Morsi could be tainted by allegations of voting violations instigated by Islamists and reported by rights groups. The charges could cast doubt on the democratic credentials of the Islamists and lead to damaging analogies between Morsi's administration and Mubarak's authoritarian regime, which oversaw massive electoral fraud for years.

The opposition is demanding an investigation of alleged wrongdoing in the vote.

The Brotherhood insisted violations were limited and should not affect the referendum's integrity.

But prominent lawyer and rights activist Negad Borai described the violations as systematic.

"What happened in the referendum could lead to violence and bloodshed if repeated in a parliamentary election when the stakes are higher," he warned.

5 Trends in 2013 That Small Business Owners Can't Afford to Ignore ...

Is it just me, or does it seem like the pace of business is increasing exponentially with every passing year? Each year has certainly brought its own game-changing technological advances and platforms that have affected the way businesses communicate with their customers and market their products and services. 2013 promises to be no different.

But if you start looking into the matter, you?ll quickly see that there are several distinct business patterns to look out at for in the new year, and each one of them is big enough to cause an avoidable splash.

As a time strapped, cash strapped small business owner, how do you choose which ones to pay attention to? For starters, here are five, over-ridding trends that you, as a small business owner, simply cannot afford to ignore:

Trend #1: The big squeeze. In order to maximize their reach, many big box corporations and Internet-based companies have begun offering an unprecedented range of really convenient services including enhanced personalization, same day delivery, and product customizations, and they are doing all of this at a competitively low price range. Because of this, small businesses will literally be force to adapt one or more of the following strategies in 2013: offering a highly specialized product or service, focusing on an ultra-specific niche, building an engaged community of customers around the business, and banding together with other local businesses to save expenses and cross-promote.

Trend #2: A matter of reputation. With online product reviews, social media and viral video, consumers will be more empowered than ever in 2013 to share their experiences, both positive ones and negative ones, about the products and services they use. Small businesses will need to double their efforts to keeps tabs on their reputation online, make sure their products and services deliver what was promised.

Trend #3: Mobile business monopoly. Small business owners need to respond to the growing proliferation of mobile devices. This actually includes several trends: mobile marketing, mobile payments, and web presence optimization for mobile devices. Over the past couple of years mobile optimization meant smart phones, but with the emergence of affordable mini tablets, like the popular Kindle Fire series from Amazon, we are going to see a lot more people connecting to the Internet and to each other through these devices. (And this also includes new items, like Microsoft?s smartly designed Surface- that will bridge the gap between PC and tablet computing). This means some of you have got to start thinking about optimizing your sites for both a smartphone and a tablet experience.

Trend #4: Run on talent. If your company is in the tech industry or you are in need of tech support positions, then you?ve probably noticed how hard it has become to attract talented, experienced employees.?This will likely only get tougher in 2013. Many of the best employees are already employed, or are getting grabbed by big companies that can offer super attractive packages. These employees may be reticent to jump to something new. Finding the right combination of hard and?soft skills?will continue to be a major challenge for small business employers next year.

Trend #5: Keep it simple.?When it comes to web-based design two words define the current trend: keep it simple and visual. That sites, such as Pinterest, have taken off is further proof that people are looking for visual content with instant appeal- from either a ascetic of informational standpoint. Moreover, sophisticated data visualization, specifically the art of turning complex data sets into a visual so that immediate patterns and/or fundamental principles become instantly apparent, is also gaining in popularity.

In short, there are many trends and movements that will shape the business world in the coming year, some may apply to your business, others not. But the previous five are definitely ones to watch out for. If you ignore them, then you risk being left in the dust.

Press shot of forthcoming ZTE Grand S leaks ahead of CES unveiling

Android Central

We've already seen the first signs of ZTE's forthcoming CES announcement, but as we enter the holiday period we're treated to an alleged first look at the device. This leaked press render is supposedly the 5-inch, 1080p ZTE Grand S. Other than an image and a name, we still know very, very little about the device aside from its size and screen resolution. Oh, and it's thin.

Android Central @ CES

Further confirming the Grand S name, ZTE has been teasing the device themselves over on their Sina Weibo account. Posted there are some sketches of the Grand S -- and by sketches, we really do mean sketches -- and a promotional flyer depicting the Grand S name adorned on the side of a boat. The writing may be in Chinese, but "CES2013" definitely is not. Whatever the finished product actually ends up being, Android Central will be on the ground in Las Vegas to bring you it all.

Brain imaging insight into cannabis as a pain killer

Friday, December 21, 2012

The pain relief offered by cannabis varies greatly between individuals, a brain imaging study carried out at the University of Oxford suggests.

The researchers found that an oral tablet of THC, the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis, tended to make the experience of pain more bearable, rather than actually reduce the intensity of the pain.

MRI brain imaging showed reduced activity in key areas of the brain that substantiated the pain relief the study participants experienced.

'We have revealed new information about the neural basis of cannabis-induced pain relief,' says Dr Michael Lee of Oxford University's Centre for Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Brain (FMRIB).

He adds: 'Our small-scale study, in a controlled setting, involved 12 healthy men and only one of many compounds that can be derived from cannabis. That's quite different from doing a study with patients. My view is the findings are of interest scientifically but it remains to see how they impact the debate about use of cannabis-based medicines. Understanding cannabis' effects on clinical outcomes, or the quality of life of those suffering chronic pain, would need research in patients over long time periods.'

The researchers report their findings in the journal Pain. The study was funded by the UK Medical Research Council and the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Oxford Biomedical Research Centre.

Long-term pain, often without clear cause, is a complex healthcare problem. Different approaches are often needed to help patient manage pain, and can include medications, physiotherapy and other forms of physical therapy, and psychological support. For a few patients, cannabis or cannabis-based medications remain effective when other drugs have failed to control pain, while others report very little effect of the drug on their pain but experience side-effects.

'We know little about cannabis and what aspects of pain it affects, or which people might see benefits over the side-effects or potential harms in the long term. We carried out this study to try and get at what is happening when someone experiences pain relief using cannabis,' says Dr Lee.

The Oxford research team carried out a series of MRI scans with each of the 12 volunteers at the FMRIB centre in Oxford.

Before a scan, participants were given either a 15mg tablet of THC or a placebo. THC, or delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, is the active psychotropic compound in cannabis ? the ingredient that's responsible for the high that drives recreational use of the drug.

To induce a certain level of pain, the volunteers also had a cream rubbed into the skin of one leg. This was either a dummy cream or a cream that contained 1% capsaicin, the ingredient of chillis that causes a hot, burning and painful sensation.

Each participant had four MRI tests to cover each combination of THC or placebo, and chilli pain-inducing cream or dummy cream.

'The participants were asked to report the intensity and unpleasantness of the pain: how much it burned and how much it bothered them,' says Dr Lee. 'We found that with THC, on average people didn't report any change in the burn, but the pain bothered them less.'

While this average effect was statistically significant, there was great variability among the participants in THC's effect on the pain they experienced. Only six out of the 12 reported a clear change in how much the pain bothered them, for example.

The brain imaging results substantiate the reports of the participants. The change in unpleasantness of pain was matched with a suppression of activity in the part of the brain called the anterior mid-cingulate cortex. This structure sits in a deep part of the brain and is involved in many functions, and has previously been implicated in the emotional aspects of pain.

There were also changes in activity of the right amygdala that correlated with the lessening in the unpleasantness of the pain with THC. It is already known that the right side of the amygdala can be 'primed' by pain.

Of most interest to the researchers, however, was the strength of the connection in individuals between their right amydala and a part of the cortex called the primary sensorimotor area. The strength of this connection in individual participants correlated well with THC's different effects on the pain that that volunteer experienced.

This is suggestive that there might be a way of predicting who would see benefits from taking cannabis for pain relief.

'We may in future be able to predict who will respond to cannabis, but we would need to do studies in patients with chronic pain over longer time periods,' says Dr Lee.

He adds: 'Cannabis does not seem to act like a conventional pain medicine. Some people respond really well, others not at all, or even poorly. Brain imaging shows little reduction in the brain regions that code for the sensation of pain, which is what we tend to see with drugs like opiates. Instead cannabis appears to mainly affect the emotional reaction to pain in a highly variable way.'

Net Neutrality Returns - Hit & Run : Reason.com - Reason Online

At the end of 2010, the Federal Communications Commission passed so-called "net neutrality" rules giving the FCC new power to regulate traffic management practices on data networks. Those rules are currently being challenged?by Verizon, which argues that the rules violate the First Amendment and lack sufficient statutory basis. A?court is expected to rule on the matter next year.

In the meantime, though, Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden is proposing new legislation that would enforce certain traffic management rules. Via Wired:

A proposal forbidding internet service providers from turning the data-cap meter off to grant a so-called internet fast lane to preferential online services was introduced Thursday in the Senate.

The bill by Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) comes a week after a report found that the institutionalization of data caps by ISPs?is geared toward profiteering rather than the stated goal of managing traffic congestion.

?A covered internet service provider may not, for purposes of measuring data usage or otherwise, provide preferential treatment of data that is?based on the source or the content of the data,? Wyden?s bill reads.

Ars Technica noted that Comcast had?not counted its Xbox video-streaming app against its data caps. Comcast, however, no longer enforces its data caps.

?Data caps create challenges for consumers and run the risk of undermining innovation in the digital economy if they are imposed bluntly and not designed to truly manage network congestion,??Wyden said in a statement.

Among other things, the proposal demands a standardized method for measuring data and also questions data caps altogether. That?s because it grants the Federal Communications Commission with regulatory power over data-cap pricing.

So a report has suggested that Internet service providers are, or at least were, arranging their business and pricing practices in a way that allows them to maximize their profits? It is surprising that anyone was able to uncover evidence to this effect. And obviously it must not be allowed to happen again.?

Our Tallahassee Baby Shower

Before the days of failed pregnancy tests, and fertility drugs, and miscarriage, and invasive inspections of my reproductive factory, I saw pregnancy through different eyes.? I saw it as a 40 week celebration of pinks and blues filled with anecdotal food cravings and the occasional bout of heartburn.

But after my struggles, pregnancy feels more like an Olympics training camp.? A 24/7 battle to get to the goal.? No frills.? Just hard work and determination.? A battle of mental and physical wills.? I?ve foregone much of the standard celebrations, as I?ve been busy holding my breath.? I?ve spent the majority of my pregnancy too scared to look at the medal, convincing myself I?d be counting my chickens before they hatched, and then, praying like hell my chicken doesn?t hatch a moment before he?s supposed to.

So when Shayna and Renee offered to throw me a baby shower, it felt strange- almost like I wasn?t supposed to have one.? But I accepted their generosity with enthusiasm and began registering for our baby the same day.? (You gotta be on the ball, you know.)

I flew to Tallahassee for said shower this past weekend.? My shower! ??I barely slept the night before, knowing I?d be reunited with so many people I love, who love me, and even more than that, people who LOVE my unborn baby.? I couldn?t wait to show them the belly I?m so proud of, and hoped Henry might even high five a few of them through my skin (although he only performed for my sister-in law, for Shayna, for Amanda Smith, and for my mother-in-law).? Stingy.

Renee allowed me to crash with her, allowing me ample time with my nine month old nephew, who reminded me a million times how much fun is in my immediate future.? That kid does things to my heart I?ve never experienced.? (And for fun, here are a couple photos I was able to capture that will make you fall in love right along with me.) ?It?s nearly impossible to imagine how my love for my own son will be even stronger.

I was emotional from the moment I landed.? Everyone was busy celebrating my belly- touching on my stomach, squealing polite ?you?re all belly? types of sentiments, and talking to my fetus like he might respond.? Every gesture made me happy.? I don?t have many personal boundaries (shocking, I know), so I accept most all advances with enthusiasm.

I even got to talk ?baby? with some of my littlest buddies over stir fry and marshmallow ice cream.

?The experience seemed nearly ?out of body?.? I watched the weekend unfold, firmly centered around my baby and me.? The shower was beautiful.? My friends proved how well they know me by thinking of the tiniest details and crafting them in a way they knew I?d adore.

Brightly colored month-by-month stickers adorned a garland of onesies, and my friends all wrote notes for me to open each month of Henry?s first year.? My craft-deficient ass was blown away by the intricate choo-choo train constructed of totally reusable baby items by my friend Betsy of The Booten Family Blog?fame (also my Fuzz?s phenomenal daycare provider, and her mother, Beth.) ?(Betsy also constructed the diaper babies that decorated the room.)? Impressed?? Yeah, me too.? (She?s also a fabulous photographer and provided some of the photos for this post!) ?Shayna put together Sunflower centerpieces to remind me of my Kansas roots and threw in baby?s breath because, um duh, it was a BABY shower.

The menu was thorough. ?(Right down to Bloody Marys and Mimosas.) The food was delicious. (I had shrimp and grits.) ?And desserts were provided by a good friend of mine, who used to work with me in a boring office setting and now flexes her brilliance in the kitchen by baking some of the best stuff I?ve ever tasted!? (Thank Oprah she didn?t bake often when we worked together, because my stomach knows no limits.)? If you are in or around Tallahassee, I STRONGLY suggest you talk to her about impressing the guests of your next event with her sugar cookies.? Ho-lay mo-lay. ?Check out Cakes by Alisha on Facebook!

One of the coolest, most ?make me tear up? moments of the shower was the favor cards placed on the table.? In honor of my fight to conceive, Shayna and Renee made donations in lieu of favors to Resolve, The National Infertility Association.? I don?t know if I?ll ever stop thinking of myself as infertile- even when they place my baby on my belly in the hospital.? The fear and pain of repeated failures and never knowing if we?d ?get here? is something I wouldn?t wish on anyone.? Their donations toward helping someone else ?get here? means more to me than I can explain.

I?m not a big baby shower gamer.? The thought of melted candy bars in diapers disturbs me, so instead, we played a Newlywed Game of sorts.? They asked George a slew of baby related questions prior to the shower, got his answers, and then asked me to see if mine matched.? Such. Pressure.? I?m not totally sure how we scored, but George?s answers were perfect. ?Por ejemplo:

Question:? What physical quality of yours do you hope the baby inherits?
George:? I don?t know.? My eyes, I guess.

Question:? What physical quality of Jen?s do you hope the baby inherits?
George:? Everything else.? Except for her boobs, because that would be completely unfortunate.

That guy? is the dopest I know.

I spent a couple of hours visiting with friends, opening gift after gift after gift after?? I wasn?t able to fit it all in my suitcase home, that?s for sure.

I can?t begin to thank my friends and family enough.? Some traveled hours to get there, others spent a gajillion dollars hosting the thing and/or buying gifts, and I was even lucky enough to ?meet? a blog friend for the first time!? She?s been a loyal blog supporter and follower, and made her way to my shower!? How lucky is this baby?!?!?? Two people I?d never even met gave him a gift!? People are awesome.? And ?we? are grateful.

No one will ever convince me that I?m not blessed with the greatest friends in the world.

Shayna and Renee, I wanted to hug you and thank you and cry and vomit emotions of gratitude all over you, but you know me better than that.? The knot in my throat doesn?t allow for me to say all the things I feel sometimes, especially if those things might choke me up.? I?m better when I have a chance to compose my blubbering self and put those feelings on paper.? This celebration of motherhood once seemed like such a distant dream, and you both put your whole hearts in to making my baby shower something beyond what I could even hope for.? I know how lucky I am.? And I love you both.
