BenQ Joybee GP2

The BenQ Joybee GP2 ($599 direct) palmtop projector is the follow-up to the BenQ Joybee GP1, an Editors? Choice from 2009. The new model has added some nice touches, most notably higher brightness and resolution, a dock for an iPhone or iPod touch, an HDMI port, and an SD card slot. The rest of the market hasn?t stood still, though, with palmtop projectors becoming brighter and packing in features, and other iPhone-friendly projectors coming on the scene. Despite some image problems (with both data and video), the GP2 is an enjoyable product that I wouldn?t hesitate to recommend.

The GP2 is built around a DLP chip along with an LED light source meant to last for the life of the projector. The LEDs?rated at 20,000 hours (30,000 if you stick to eco mode)?help keep the total cost of ownership down, as you don?t have to factor in lamp replacement costs. Unlike standard projector lamps, they're also mercury free?a plus for the environment.

This projector is rated at 200 lumens, up from the GP1?s 100. Other palmtop projectors are also ramping up the brightness. Last July I reviewed the 200-lumen Acer K11 Projector ($379 list, 4 stars), and even brighter palmtop projectors are in our reviews queue. The GP2 is the third projector we?ve reviewed to incorporate an i-Thing dock; the other two are both Editors? Choice products, the Optoma Neo-i ($450 street, 4 stars) and Epson MegaPlex MG-850HD Projector ($799 direct,? 4 stars).

In terms of connections, the GP2 adds a little something for everybody. In addition to the iPhone dock, there?s a mini-HDMI port, a USB type A port that fits a thumb drive, and a USB mini-B port for connecting to a computer, and an SD memory-card slot. You can play music or videos, or view photos or documents, from a USB key, SD card, or from 1.3GB of internal memory.

Another port fits an included octopus cable, which connects either to a computer via a VGA connector or to an audio/video source with 3 RCA plugs. You can change sources?either with the controls on top of the projector or with the small remote, which is shaped like a headstone but fits comfortably in a hand; the source options are displayed in a carousel-type menu on the home screen.

As a palmtop projector, the GP2 is a bit on the large side, at 2.2 by 5.5 by 5.1 inches (HWD), though it did fit into my outstretched palm with fingers fully splayed. I weighted it on a postage scale at 1.2 pounds; 2.0 pounds when I included the power adaptor and power cord. An optional battery is expected to be available soon.

The projector has a black top and white sides, which curve outward toward the top. Three sides have speaker or ventilation grilles. One side has most of the ports; the side next to the lens holds the focus ring; and the back has an SD card slot. There?s no lens cover, so you?ll want to keep the projector in its soft carrying case when not in use.?

Image Quality

The Joybee GP2 displayed an image that filled our test screen (about 66 inches diagonal) from about 5 feet away. (As is typical of palmtops, the projector has a focus wheel but lacks a zoom control.)? Data images were bright enough to be usable in a darkened room, although a couple of images showing colored lines on a black background were marginal, as the lines did not display well. When I added a modest amount of ambient light to the room, the images looked washed out.

I ran the GP2 through our standard suite of DisplayMate tests. Color generally was good, with occasional, mild yellow or greenish tints in images. To its credit, the projector shows very little of the rainbow effect that often plagues DLP projectors, in which bright areas break up into little red-green-blue rainbows when you shift your gaze or an object moves on screen.

The projector did have one notable issue. According to BenQ, the GP2?s native resolution is WXGA (1,280 by 800 pixels). However, in several data images, I saw a pattern of spurious, faint lines or bands, reminiscent of a scaling artifact in which there?s a mismatch between the image source?s and the projector?s (specifically, its DLP chip?s) resolution. ?

We?ve seen similar issues in other WXGA DLP mini-projectors lately, and the chip maker, Texas Instruments, has yet to explain the nature of the artifacts. I?m not certain if the GP2?s issue is identical (BenQ couldn?t specify the exact model chip), but the lines?which appear mostly in images with finely patterned or hatched backgrounds?are distracting. In presentations, as opposed to our test images, they?d be most likely to affect readability of smaller type. The two smallest fonts in the GP2?s type test were blurred, which is worse than usual for the WXGA projectors I?ve tested.

I viewed video on the GP2 from two sources: a DVD player over an HDMI cable, and my iPhone. Although you could use it to view movies with, it wouldn?t be my preferred method, as it lost detail in both bright and dark areas, and flesh tones sometimes took on a reddish hue. At least you?ll have decent audio at a volume that should fill a small room, from the twin 2-watt speakers.

There?s a lot to like about the BenQ Joybee GP2. Its small size and portability make it useful for anything from making business presentations to small groups to showing photos, videos, or playing music at a party. Its built-in dock lets you play content from an iPhone or iPod touch. It offers connectivity via HDMI, VGA, composite video, or USB cable. The menu system is user friendly.

The GP2?s downside is that its image quality, for both data and video, was less than optimal. The Acer K11 offers better data image quality, while the larger Epson MegaPlex MG-850HD incorporates an i-Thing dock and has great data and video image quality. But the JoyBee GP2 is versatile, highly portable, and a lot of fun?well worth considering, particularly if you want to go small.

Great Home Improvement Ideas To Improve Electrical Safety | HCG ...

You know, so many times we have read about world blog and how much it is something that comes into one?s focus rather unexpectedly.

Why settle for being average in the way you deal with things that come up when you can get helpful knowledge that enables you to do more. No need to question too much or feel alarmed about inexplicable desires to discover what is behind something that catches your eye. People like us are the ones who like supplying information to help others, but we are also subject to the same influences as everybody else ? we are curious to know.

That is where you are today, and the good news is that you can learn about this and then simply simply become better equipped to deal with it.

Yes, of course there is a ton of info out there on click here, and actually that made the selection process of what to include a bit interesting.

We are not sure if our other material will be out when this reaches you, so be sure to check our site for more information.

Just be sure to enhance what you already have discovered in this article because that is just the smart thing to do.

You really are doing the right thing by pursuing additional information, so do continue. There are always options, and the path to finding the best ones is through accurate content.

If you are considering a home improvement project, even if you have a small budget, you can still do projects safely and effectively. You can actually improve your home in many ways without spending any money. This article will focus upon projects that will do a lot for your home providing value and safety simultaneously. Many costly projects for detailed online. You can see how much it will cost you before you even start. The world economy is actually very bad right now, which will cause many people to hesitate for doing such projects.

One very natural way to naturally protect and keep your home cool in hot months is by having trees growing near your house. Any time it is hot and muggy, trees can provide the shade necessary to make the day bearable. It is important that you get a professional recommendation on the trees that will work best for you. One option that you have is contacting a nursery so that they can come to your house and tell you where the best place would be to plant your trees. So contact an expert near you and get started on your tree planting venture. Your property could also pose a problem with water if it does not adequately drain the rainfall that you get each year. You should have a positive slope leading away from your house for the water to drain adequately. An underground drainage system can also help with this problem. It is a simple process ? dig a trench, drill some holes in PVC tubing, and pile rocks on top of it. The tubing you attach will lead away from your house. You can do this drainage system very quickly and it will work effectively for years.

One other thing you might want to do is get an infrared scan for your home to see how well insulated it actually is. The charge for this process is relatively high and reflects the cost of the camera itself. This camera is so good that it is capable of giving you the information you need regardless of the season or how warm or cold it is in your home. To get the best pictures, wait till it?s dark. If you don?t have time at night, daytime imagery can be taken. Basically, the camera captures thermal images in infrared that allow you to see where air is escaping from your house.

It is in your best interest to always plan home improvement projects with safety in mind. The danger for some people is they have no idea about such issues, and sometimes they proceed with no clue. It might kill you, or at least injure you very badly if you do the wrong thing. So stay away from anything that has to do with load characteristics changing, or doing anything at all that involves electricity.

It is quite normal to come across or encounter some types of challenging considerations with click here ? that has already been experienced by so many. There has really never been a lack of content, or information, and the web has only just made it more readily available plus encouraging people to produce more. But beware because one out-growth of that is the amount of disagreement that can come to play among different sources.

What we are getting at is the absolute need for you to be watchful in your desire to study this material, or anything else. There is really not much else you can do about that, but you can sharpen your mind so you will be protected.

VA Loans Offer Veterans A Home Buying Advantage Like None ...

Of all the amazing benefits that military veterans are offered for their service to their nation, one of the most beneficial is their access to VA loans that make it easier for them to afford a their own home. Normally, one home loan tends to look pretty much like the next one, with few variations between the two, but the mortgage offers made through the Department of Veteran affairs are different. If you?ve never heard of one of these special mortgage deals, you might be interested to know just how lucky these home shopping veterans actually are.

Easily the most noteworthy benefit is the fact that any veteran that would like one of these mortgages are almost guaranteed to be approved on terms they can afford. As long as you are a veteran or other qualified military personnel, you have the opportunity to finance your home through this program designed by the Department of Veteran Affairs, no matter what you look like or where or where you?re from.

In many cases, a veteran who is taking advantage of this program is not required to have a down payment at all, meaning that they can simply choose their home, sign their loan agreement, and move in without spending a dime on the lender. Veterans also get to enjoy some unusually low interest rates that are comparable to the lowest interest rates you?d find in the regular home financing market. If zero down payments and a low interest rate isn?t enough to free up their finances, veterans can also negotiate to have their monthly payments lowered by extending the amount of time required to pay the mortgage off.

Even with the lowest monthly payments possible, some individuals will still run into some trouble that will make it hard for them to make payments, but veterans can expect a lot of forgiveness from their VA lender. For one, if a veteran has experienced a job loss or is taking care of a terminally ill family member or is experiencing any other type of financial hardship, they will be able to enjoy a certain amount of leniency on a failure to make loan payments.

Since the program offers amounts that range around half a million dollars, veterans don?t have to worry about being stuck in small, unpleasant homes. With all these advantages, it?s easy to understand why VA loan is such a great benefit to veteran members of the military. You just can?t beat being able to live in a fantastic home without having to break the bank.

VA Home Loan program makes it easier for veterans to qualify for home financing with less stringent income and credit qualifications; just check out va loans and va hybrid.

Singer N'Dour: Senegal becoming 'dictatorship'

Police opened fire with tear gas Saturday on a commercial avenue in Senegal's capital, as security forces wrapped up early voting in a contentious presidential race.

It marks the fourth straight day of protests before next week's critical election, which is pitting the country's 85-year-old president against a young opposition demanding his departure. The increasingly tense atmosphere on the ground has many concerned there may be unrest if President Abdoulaye Wade is declared the winner of the vote.

On Saturday morning, the country's 23,000-strong security force including police and military, lined up to vote early. European Union observers said the ballots had arrived on time and voting proceeded calmly.

The normally bustling capital of Senegal has been disrupted by protests every few days since January when the country's highest court ruled that Wade could be a candidate in this month's election. Just months shy of his 86th birthday, Wade is seeking another seven-year term in a nation where most people don't live past the age of 60.

If he wins, it would be his third term, even though he oversaw a revision to the constitution in 2001 imposing a two-term limit.

Among those standing for election is singer-turned-politician Youssou N'Dour, 52, best known for his duet Seven Seconds with Neneh Cherry.

"I never had personal ambition to be president," N'Dour told Britain's Sunday Telegraph. "But the situation is so bad at the moment. Senegal needs a renaissance."

The newspaper reported that some 60 per cent of Senegal's population is illiterate, almost half are unemployed and the per capita income is just $1,041 dollars (?665) a year.

"We're not calling for an Arab Spring-style revolution," said N'Dour. "But we certainly need an evolution."

N'Dour expressed frustration that Wade has refused to step aside from power.

"He's made a $26 million statue, but he's not given the people running water," he said. "The president is behaving like a king. We do not have diamonds or petrol here. But what we do have is even more precious: a shop window for democracy. We are proud of that. And surely that is just as important to fight for as oil or gold?"

Shopkeepers in Dakar pulled down metal grills to protect their businesses as the blast of tear gas being fired resonated in the capital's downtown core. The vendors that hawk their wares on the street hurried to pack up their goods.

Four people have been killed since the protests began, a death toll that is small compared to the election violence that recently gripped Ivory Coast, Guinea, Nigeria and Congo, but high for Senegal which has long been seen as a model of tolerance and stability.

Late Friday, police attempting to disperse a crowd launched a tear gas grenade inside a mosque belonging to the Tidiane Muslim "confrerie," or brotherhood. Enraged worshippers ran outside.

Senegalese TV showed an officer who braved the cloud of gas in order to kick away the spewing canister from the door of the mosque, in order to calm the anger.

The country's Muslim brotherhoods hold enormous sway, and on Saturday, Interior Minister Ousmane Ngom traveled to Tivaouane, home of the Tidiane's khalife, religious leader. A mob of angry youths encircled the house of the khalife, as Ngom was inside, according to Ngom's spokesman Mbaye Thiam who was reached by telephone in Dakar.

The state-owned news service said that the youths were preventing Ngom from leaving and that they had also set fire to a government building nearby.

(AP) ? A Los Angeles radio station has pulled two popular talk radio hosts off the air for comments they made about Whitney Houston.

KFI AM 640 suspended John Kobylt and Ken Chiampou, the hosts of the "John and Ken Show," for "making insensitive and inappropriate comments about the late Whitney Houston," it said in a statement Thursday.

"Management does not condone, support or tolerate statements of this kind," the station said.

According to audio posted online at UrbanInformer.com, the hosts called the late singer a "crack ho" and said she was "cracked out for 20 years."

Kobylt said in statement that he and Chiampou "used language that was inappropriate" and they "sincerely apologize" to their listeners and to Houston's family.

"We made a mistake, and we accept the station's decision," said Kobylt.

The hosts, who broadcast their show weekday afternoons, will return to the airwaves Feb. 27.

Kobylt and Chiampou often rail against taxes and illegal immigration. The National Hispanic Media Coalition said last year that it targeted the show's advertisers to urge them to stop backing the program.

The group said the hosts promote hate speech and appealed to listeners to call and harass an advocate for immigrant rights about state legislation to give financial aid to illegal immigrant college students.

"A temporary suspension is not enough," Alex Nogales, president and CEO of NHMC, said in a statement. "How many times do John and Ken get to spew their hate, apologize and then do it again after taking off a long weekend? KFI must permanently remove John and Ken from the air. Los Angeles deserves better."

Pancreatic hormone linked with severe heart disease in obese and diabetic patients

(SACRAMENTO, Calif.) Severe heart damage in people who are obese and diabetic is linked with a pancreatic hormone called amylin, UC Davis researchers have found.

In the failing hearts of patients who were obese and diabetic, the scientists discovered strings of proteins, small fibers and plaques made of amylin, the hormone that produces the feeling of being full after eating. They also showed in an animal model that amylin accumulation in the heart leads to heart muscle destruction and failure.

Published in the February 17 issue of the journal Circulation Research, the study also found amylin buildup in overweight patients who are not obese, suggesting the potentially dangerous accumulations may start before a diabetes diagnosis.

Heart failure is the number-one killer in obese and diabetic populations. Controlling the circulation of amylin hormone in the blood might lessen or prevent disabilities and deaths from heart disease, the scientists said.

"Amylin appears to be a stealth killer," said Florin Despa, an assistant professor of pharmacology at UC Davis and senior author of the study. "There is only one amylin protein for every 100 insulin proteins in the blood, so it has been under the radar until recently."

In healthy people, amylin circulates in the blood together with insulin --the hormone that controls carbohydrate and fat metabolism -- and principally regulates gastric fluxes and the sensation of satiety.

In studies of both normal and failing donated hearts of people undergoing heart-transplant surgery, the researchers found little or no amylin accumulation in lean people. But a quite different picture emerged from examinations of heart tissue of obese and type 2 diabetic patients. In failing hearts of these patients, they found extensive accumulation of amylin in strings of 10 to 20 proteins called oligomers. They detected a smaller but still abnormal buildup in nonfailing hearts from patients who were overweight but not obese.

Using genetically engineered rats that secrete human amylin in the same proportion as it is found in obese people, the researchers determined that amylin oligomers attach to membranes of myocytes -- the heart-muscle cells that control heart beats. This made the membranes more porous to calcium, which changed myocyte contractility, altered the expression of vital proteins and, eventually, caused heart muscle cells to die.

"The significantly altered cardiac myocyte structure and function in the rats, along with the high levels of oligomers in the human heart tissue, strongly suggest that amylin is a major contributor to heart failure in obese and diabetic patients," Despa said.

Despa thinks that the link between cardiac amylin accumulation and heart disease has been overlooked because amylin circulates in relatively small amounts in blood, and because animals, including rats, that are often used in most studies of diabetic cardiac dysfunction do not normally express the form of amylin that aggregates and builds up in tissues.

The scientists now hope to find ways to curb amylin buildup in the heart before it has the chance to destroy muscle tissue.

"Drugs that block amylin from forming into toxic oligomers could significantly reduce the chances of heart failure," Despa said.

For the research, amylin protein accumulation was detected in human and rat heart tissues and cell cultures using immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence and Western blot. Heart dysfunction in the rats was identified by studying the physiological performance of isolated myocytes and by measuring the expression of tell-tale proteins that deform cardiac muscle. The researchers used echocardiography and measurements of blood flow to assess heart tissue structure and performance and changes in myocardium contractions.

The lead researcher on the study was Sanda Despa, an assistant professor of pharmacology at UC Davis. Other UC Davis authors were Le Chen, postdoctoral scientist in the pharmacology department; Anne Knowlton and Donald Bers, professors in the pharmacology department; and Peter Havel, professor of molecular biosciences with the School of Veterinary Medicine.

Additional authors were Kenneth Margulies, professor in the Cardiovascular Research Institute at the University of Pennsylvania, and Heinrich Taegtmeyer, professor of the internal medicine department at the University of Texas School of Medicine.

The research was funded by the American Heart Association, National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health and a Vision Grant from the National Board of Advisors of UC Davis Health System. The genetically engineered rats used in the study were provided by Pfizer.

Lobbyist weeps after wiretap played in Ala. trial (AP)

MONTGOMERY, Ala. ? A lobbyist wept on the witness stand during a corruption trial in Alabama when she heard a taped phone call of her casino owner client suggesting she expose her breasts to win a senator's vote on gambling legislation.

Jennifer Pouncy testified Tuesday in the trial of former Sen. Jim Preuitt, two other present and former senators, and three people associated with casinos.

Pouncy lobbied for the electronic bingo casino Country Crossing. In an FBI wiretap, Country Crossing developer Ronnie Gilley suggests to Pouncy's supervisor that she expose her breasts to Preuitt and allow him to touch her.

Gilley says in the call: "Tell her I'll give her a $50,000 bonus."

Pouncy pleaded guilty to conspiracy; Gilley pleaded guilty to bribery and conspiracy.

(AP) ? An undercover informant was paid about $31,000 in cash for his critical role in an investigation that led to charges against members of a militia accused of plotting rebellion against the U.S. government, an FBI agent testified Tuesday.

Agent Leslie Larsen was the first witness at the weeks-long trial of seven members of a southern Michigan militia called Hutaree. She answered a series of friendly questions from a federal prosecutor, mostly describing the timeline of the 2008-10 investigation and certain milestones in the case.

Larsen said informant Dan Murray secretly recorded conversations with the militia while he trained or attended meetings with members, especially leader David Stone. Murray received $25,000 for his time ? 300 to 400 hours ? and $5,600 for expenses, such as his cellphone, tent, travel and sleeping bags.

Murray will be a key witness later in the trial.

Militia members from Michigan, Indiana and Ohio are accused of conspiring to ambush and kill a police officer, then attack the funeral procession with explosives and trigger a broader revolt against the U.S. government. They deny the charges and claim authorities overreached.

"A new president comes into office. The agencies that are sworn to investigate and protect him are very, very curious about what's going on out there," defense attorney James Thomas told jurors in his opening statement. "That premise ? that somebody would be out there who is going to be a danger, either to the country or to the president of the United States ? got distorted.

"It was a conclusion that was brought to be supported by facts, facts that were manipulated," Thomas said.

Another defense attorney, Mark Satawa, signaled to the jury that Murray's credibility will be under intense scrutiny.

"There was not a single act of violence perpetrated by a single individual sitting over here. ... Don't let fear be the thing you fear," Satawa told jurors, a day after prosecutors during their opening statement held up weapons and military-style equipment seized during the 2010 arrests.

During her testimony, Larsen said Murray was paid $12,700 for work ahead of the Hutaree investigation. She said he attended meetings of at least one other militia but there were no indications of illegal activity.

Larsen said the FBI removed Murray from the Hutaree in January 2010, more than two months before charges were filed, because an undercover agent had been securely planted inside the group.

Murray had his own problems in February of that year when he fired a gun toward his wife and, in a separate incident, attempted suicide, according to court records. Defense lawyers have suggested that the informant's personal problems may have motivated the government to round up Hutaree members, not because of some threat against police as authorities have insisted.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Sheldon Light told the judge there's no evidence that the government intervened with local prosecutors to help Murray.

"Light's statement is accurate," said Maria Miller, a spokeswoman for the Wayne County prosecutor's office.

In court, the government played portions of videos apparently taken by Hutaree members and posted online. They show people dressed like soldiers firing weapons in the woods, crawling on their bellies and instructing one other about hand-to-hand combat. In one clip, a United Nations flag burns from a pole and is replaced by a Hutaree flag.

Larsen said she was concerned.

"Other militias have a designated training range, a designated firing range," the agent testified.

Of the original nine defendants, Joshua Clough is the only one to make a deal with prosecutors. He pleaded guilty in December to illegal use of a firearm and faces a mandatory five-year prison sentence. He could be called as a witness to testify for the government.

Besides conspiracy charges, all face at least one firearm charge.

Are We Women Responsible For Our Own Smaller Earnings? | Baby ...

As an advocate for financial literacy, some might be expecting me to discuss the stock market or share stories of riches gained in real estate or mining, but today?s subject is one that?s personal to me, and which will give you an insight into why five years ago, I started offering support to women who want financial independence.

I have touched on responsibility for women?s lower earning before, including discussing it passionately from my soap-box, but only now am I getting close to discussing the whole kit?n'caboodle. I recognise there?s still more for me to find out and comprehend ? I relish what?s yet to come, because the full picture will assist genuine equality for women in the area of income, as well as helping women generate their own riches, sans guilt and other internal turmoil.

I don?t describe myself as a women?s activist or a feminist, but I do feel us women have been victims too long: too many of us are poor; we take an unjustified portion of the financial hits; frequently make good deficiencies; and often find ourselves saying ?I can?t?. So ? it?s time for us to say enough excuses; enough denials; enough self-blame; and enough justifications!

Many of you reading this will know that management roles are still being given mainly to men, and that women are often in lower status jobs and earning less ? which adds up to retiring poor. Yes, women still do the majority of the family- and child-care, employers can be reluctant to offer flexible working options and discrimination still exists. However, we can take control in certain areas: getting better at negotiating, being more assertive, and feeling confident enough to think that we deserve financial success.

In most cultures, women are conditioned to put others? needs before our own and to think that our primary worth comes through our relationships with others. We are told that this is being ?nice? and that it makes us likeable, or good mothers or spouses. There can be a range of punishments when we step outside the allotted roles.

In general, women have been shown to have an external focus when making decisions, taking account of a whole group of people and surrounding conditions. Whereas men have a tendency to be driven by internal goals and status. So it could be said that women?s strengths can make us potentially better managers and leaders than men! I?m not saying that either one approach is right; for one thing, different approaches lead to diverse outcomes.

It pains me to say it, but we women can be our own worst enemies. We sometimes forget to aid each other in ascending the career ladder or attaining wealth goals. It can be all matey-matey when we?re all in the same boat, but when one of us starts moving upwards, that support can evaporate.

Some women resent others who seem able to transcend all the internal and external barriers, and leave them to sink or swim. In our society, women who really go for it, promoting themselves and gaining influence and power, are often labelled as unfeminine or even bitchy ? while men are lauded for doing the same thing. Given the huge amount of social conditioning, it?s not surprising that small numbers of women decide to do this; it can be a lonely furrow to plough. Men have had several hundred years to hone their business networking skills and many men feel rightly comfortable generating wealth and being open about their success. In my experience, most women do not feel comfortable with these things.

So, we women who want financial success need to step up to the plate and be different. We need to find a way round any fear we might feel and take action anyway. We need to challenge assumptions of what?s ?nice? or ?feminine?, we need to be bold and be willing to celebrate our success.

I say that accepting less pay is not an option ? who?s with me?

80% of women die without a partner around, and 75% of them die in poverty.

Do we want to end this cycle? Then let?s acknowledge our skills, our entitlement and our power ? act on this in your own life today.

I love receiving your feedback ? did I push your buttons? Am I wrong? Add your thoughts below or email me at cb@smartwomensmoney.com. Let?s make the change we want to see.

?Bye for now,
