Los Angeles Still Struggles to Serve Students With Disabilities

The latest progress report on Los Angeles' ability to serve its students with disabilities shows the district is making headway in some areas, but it is still falling short of a 6-year-old target for providing services as frequently and for as long as special education students need them.

Exclusive: UAE's Dana Gas won't repay bond - sources

DUBAI (Reuters) - Dana Gas is set to become the first United Arab Emirates (UAE) company to fail to pay an Islamic bond on maturity, three sources familiar with the matter said on Tuesday, sending its stock and bond prices sharply lower.

The UAE's largest listed natural gas firm, hit by payment delays from Egypt and Iraq's Kurdistan region, will not repay a $920 million convertible Islamic bond, or sukuk, when it matures on Wednesday, the sources said.

However, Sharjah-based Dana has won more time to hammer out a deal with bondholders, they added.

Dana Gas declined to comment.

Although indebted firms in the Gulf Arab state have extended maturities on billions of dollars in bank loans since the onset of the financial crisis in 2008-09, no sukuk have been restructured or unpaid on maturity.

Saudi and Kuwaiti companies have defaulted on Islamic bonds in the past, leading to complex debt negotiations which have dragged on for years. Kuwait's Investment Dar, which co-owns luxury carmaker Aston Martin, defaulted on a $100 million Islamic debt issue in 2009.

Dana has a $1 billion sukuk maturing on October 31. It repurchased about $80 million of the sukuk in 2008, leaving $920 million outstanding.

The five-year sukuk, which was issued with a 7.5 percent coupon, has gained international interest as a majority of the debt is said to be owned by large investment firms including BlackRock Inc and Ashmore Group .

A source said that London-based Spinnaker Capital was among large holders. An executive at Spinnaker in London said it does not own Dana Gas bonds currently and has not held them before. BlackRock owns about 30 percent of the outstanding sukuk, according to two separate market sources.

There is "absolutely no chance" of a white knight swooping in to repay the bond by the due date, a source close to the talks said.

In 2009, the Abu Dhabi government stepped in at the eleventh hour to help Dubai repay developer Nakheel's $4.1 billion Islamic bond.

The sources said Dana, in which Crescent Petroleum owns a 20-percent stake, reached a standstill agreement with creditors in early October giving it six months to repay the bond.

Some creditors are preparing for a potential "post-default scenario", one source familiar with the discussions said, in which no deal would be reached at all.

STOCKS AND BONDS SINK

Shares in Dana fell 8.5 percent to 0.43 dirhams on the Abu Dhabi bourse after the Reuters report before closing down 4.26 percent.

The shares have been battered by concerns over how Dana will find funds to repay the bond and limited communication from the company on the matter. The sukuk has a conversion price of 1.926 dirhams.

The sukuk, which is lightly traded, was quoted at a bid price of 68 cents on the dollar on Tuesday, down from 78 cents on the dollar on Monday, according to prices quoted by Nomura.

Dana is to issue a statement on Wednesday or early Thursday detailing its plans to restructure the bond, said two sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity as the matter is not public.

There was a "high probability" the Dana sukuk will be restructured, London-based investment firm Exotix said in a report earlier this year, adding its restructuring valuation on the privately-owned firm was 61.5 percent of par value.

Dana, which also has a 3-percent stake in Hungarian group MOL , is not seen as a strategic entity for the UAE and so any government support is unlikely.

PAYMENT PROBLEMS

In May, Dana said it wanted to find a consensual deal with sukukholders to repay the bond, and said it had hired Blackstone Group , Deutsche Bank and law firm Latham & Watkins as advisers.

Investors have hired Moelis and law firm Linklaters as advisers.

Dana, which has operations in the UAE, Egypt and Iraq's Kurdistan region, says its cash flow has been affected by global economic conditions and regional events, including Egyptian unrest last year which delayed payments.

The company had a cash balance of 601 million dirhams ($164 million) as of June 30, 2012. Outstanding receivables on Egypt gas deliveries stood at 729 million dirhams and 1.2 billion dirhams in the Kurdistan region at that time.

In a recent interview, Dana board member and Crescent Chief Executive Majid Jafar said Egypt was paying the company for all fuel it was receiving from its operations and was optimistic outstanding payments would be settled.

Jafar said last week talks between the company and creditors were still ongoing, and have been "amicable and friendly."

Many cancer survivors face health-related quality of life issues

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Beating cancer is just the first step. More than one third of the 12.6 million cancer survivors in the United States have physical or mental problems that put their overall health in jeopardy, according to researchers at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

Their study, published in the October issue of the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, found that 25 percent of cancer survivors reported poor physical health and 10 percent reported poor mental health as compared to 10 percent and 6 percent, respectively, of adults without cancer.

The study was funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

"Until now, we didn't have clear data on quality-of-life issues for the population of U.S. cancer survivors," said the study's lead author, Kathryn Weaver, Ph.D., assistant professor of social sciences and health policy at Wake Forest Baptist. "This information should help doctors and researchers identify groups of survivors who may be at risk for long-term problems after cancer. In addition, it can help us know if some of the national efforts to improve life for cancer survivors are making a difference."

For the study, researchers analyzed data from a 2010 nationwide health survey conducted by the CDC that included data specific to cancer survivors collected by the CDC and the NCI. The scientists identified 1,822 cancer survivors and compared them with 24,804 adults with no history of cancer.

Survivors of breast cancer, prostate cancer and melanoma fared best, with health-related quality of life levels equivalent to or better than those of adults with no cancer history, according to the study.

In contrast, 40 percent of survivors of cervical, blood and colorectal cancers and survivors of cancers with a five-year survival rate of less than 25 percent (including cancers of the liver, lung and pancreas) were more likely to report physical problems that had a negative impact on their quality of life. In addition, survivors in the latter group were more likely to report mental health issues that affected their day-to-day lives.

The researchers estimated that about 3.3 million cancer survivors in the United States have poor physical health-related quality of life and almost 1.4 million have poor mental health-related quality of life.

"Recently, there has been a strong push for doctors to do a better job of communicating with cancer patients about what to expect as they finish treatment and transition to the survivor period," Weaver said. "Identifying what symptoms or problems cancer patients are facing after treatment -- fatigue, pain, depression, sleep and cognition problems -- and connecting them with the right resources or treatments is key to improving their long-term health."

Co-authors of the study are Laura P. Forsythe, Ph.D., Catherine M. Alfano, Ph.D., and Julia H. Rowland, Ph.D., of the National Cancer Institute; Bryce B. Hurricane Sandy Delays DreamWorks Animation Quarterly Earnings ...

DreamWorks Animation has rescheduled its third-quarter earnings announcement because of Hurricane Sandy, which landed on the shores of New Jersey with 90 MPH winds Monday night.

STORY: Hurricane Sandy Prompts Several Broadcast Networks to Air Reruns on Monday

DWA had been set to announce quarterly earnings on Tuesday but delayed the event until Thursday at 4:30 p.m. Eastern time.

While DWA is based in Glendale, Calif., many of the analysts who would presumably take part in a conference with DWA executives to discuss the company's earnings are located in New York, where Hurricane Sandy prompted Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange to shut down trading Monday and Tuesday.

Rowdy fans take to streets after Giants' victory

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Thousands of baseball fans took to the streets of San Francisco to celebrate the Giants' World Series victory, with revelers gathering on corners, in parks and at watering holes ? and some turning rowdy.

Fans across the city left their televisions and rushed outside, greeting diners, bar patrons and other merrymakers Sunday night after the Giants defeated the Detroit Tigers 4-3 to sweep the Series for their second title in three years.

Some violence and vandalism was reported, with revelers setting a public transit bus on fire, flipping over a vehicle and breaking the windows of several businesses and vehicles, KTVU-TV reported (http://bit.ly/TiYiTi ).

Fans also lit bonfires, fueling them with couches, signs and newspaper racks. Firefighters had to be escorted in by riot police to fight some of the fires.

Police made arrests, although the exact number was unknown. A call to a police spokesman by The Associated Press on Monday morning wasn't immediately returned.

At Polk and Bush streets in the city's Polk Gulch neighborhood, hundreds of fans sprayed champagne, set of off firecrackers and blocked traffic for at least two hours after the game.

Several blocks away, police clad in riot gear looked on as revelers danced around Civic Center plaza where they watched the game on the Jumbotron.

The thousands of fans assembled there exploded in a roar with the final out.

Anthony Yos, 10, hugged his brother Luciano Yos, 15 and the two danced in an embrace with their parents.

"This is the greatest thing," Anthony said with a smile that could go no wider. "The Giants are my favorite team."

Someone in the crowd launched fireworks a few minutes after the game and the park was awash with fans, strangers hugging strangers and wine bottles and marijuana cigarettes being freely passed through the crowd despite a heavy police presence.

"This is San Francisco, "said Laura Chu. "We know how to party."

Sara Vivas brought her 6-year-old daughter Briana Cepeda from Oakland to view the game and join the celebration. They were both clad head-to-toe in Giants garb.

"This is something she will remember forever," Sara said.

Bars of all stripes, from the Castro to Chinatown were packed with supporters of the beloved Giants.

So-called pedicabs whisked fans down roads blocked to traffic and revelers enjoyed a New Year's Eve-like freedom to roam up and down streets usually clogged with traffic.

Mayor Edwin Lee announced the ticker-tape parade would be held Wednesday at 11 a.m., down Market Street to Civic Center Plaza

"The rain in Detroit couldn't dampen the drive, talent and determination of the San Francisco Giants team tonight. Once again, the Giants brought our City together as we all cheered on our hometown heroes to another remarkable World Series victory," he said.

The 2010 parade drew hundreds of thousands fans, who lined the streets of downtown San Francisco. The parade ends at City Hall.

The party started early in Civic Center park, with many showing up hours before the 5 p.m. game on a nice Indian Summer day in San Francisco.

The city's ubiquitous food trucks did a brisk business and drummers of all types beat their instruments throughout the game.

"Where else in the world do you want to be tonight," replied Dave Wormald of Toronto. Wormald and two other colleagues were in town for a business meeting and were watching the game at their hotel when they decided to embark for City Hall.

"This is the place to be," said Jim Vliet, Wormald's colleague.

Thai cabinet reshuffle sees return of Thaksin loyalists

BANGKOK (Reuters) - A cabinet reshuffle in Thailand has brought loyal allies of self-exiled former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra into the government led by his sister, consolidating his grip on power as he bides his time before making a serious effort to come home.

Thaksin, ousted by the army in 2006, lives abroad to avoid a prison sentence for abuse of power but is widely thought to be running Southeast Asia's second-largest economy from bases in Dubai and elsewhere through Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

A former telecoms tycoon who first became prime minister in 2001, Thaksin enjoys huge support among the rural masses but has powerful enemies among the conservative elite, the military and royalist activists, all of whom, he says, undermined his governments or those of his allies.

Thaksin has set no date for his return which would be deeply divisive. Many analysts believe it could upset a fragile peace that has been in place since the army crushed protests by his supporters in mid-2010 and about 90 people were killed.

For now, Thaksin is moving his loyalists into position while Yingluck rides high in opinion polls and does not do anything to antagonize Thaksin's powerful enemies, in particular those in the army.

"We are seeing a Thaksin renaissance, with his top people being installed," said Kan Yuenyong, director of Siam Intelligence Unit, a private think tank in Bangkok.

The 23 new cabinet names endorsed on Sunday by King Bhumibol Adulyadej include six members of Thaksin's disbanded Thai Rak Thai party who re-entered politics after a five-year political ban against them for electoral fraud ended in May.

Other posts in the civil service and police have gone to Thaksin loyalists including Paradorn Pattanathabutr, who was made secretary-general of the country's National Security Council and this month said Thaksin was "like a brother".

For the time being, Thaksin has not tried to interfere too much with the army and powerful judiciary and risk stirring up a storm.

Also, plans to amend the constitution to facilitate his return that threatened to galvanize the opposition earlier this year have been put on the back burner.

"Time is on Thaksin's side, and after a year the Shinawatras have decided to go slow because it's better to be in the government than out of government," Kan said.

But in a reminder of instability and a taste of what could be in store, an anti-government rally on Sunday drew up to 10,000 people led by Boonlert Kaewprasit, a retired military officer, taking aim at what he see as nepotism in Yingluck's administration.

But for now, Thailand's highly political army has shown no signs of moving against Yingluck.

AVOIDING A BACKLASH

The new cabinet line-up leaves Finance Minister Kittirat Na Ranong, a non-party financial market technocrat, in place despite an outcry over his admission in August that he told "white lies" about export prospects.

The reshuffle - Yingluck's third since she came to power 15 months ago - comes ahead of a censure debate next month that the opposition says will target her handling of floods in 2011 and a widely criticized rice intervention scheme.

Thaksin loyalists in the cabinet include Varathep Rattanakorn, a former deputy finance minister who has been given a post in the prime minister's office, and Education Minister Pongthep Thepkanchana, a former Thaksin spokesman.

Others with close ties to Thaksin include Energy Minister Pongsak Raktapongpaisal, a veteran of the Thai Rak Thai party who is said to be close to Thaksin's other sister, Yaowapha Wongsawat.

Thaksin's brother-in-law, Priewpan Damapong, until recently national police chief, is widely expected to be given some sort of government position soon.

Analysts say the Shinawatras are surrounding themselves with seasoned political allies to help ensure the ruling party's longevity and prepare for Thaksin's return.

The placements are not just in the government.

The new Bangkok Metropolitan Police Chief is Khamronwit Thoopkrachang. In his office is a picture of himself beside former policeman Thaksin with the words: "I would not be where I am today without you, older brother".

Thaksin's nephew, Sarawut Shinawatra, has been promoted to the post of Army Commander in Bangkok's Don Muang district.

But the Shinawatras have largely left the military untouched in an unspoken truce that has allowed the other changes to go ahead, analysts say.

"If they go too far, with a systematic promotion and replacement of his opponents, then a backlash like in 2006 is possible," said Thitinan Pongsudhirak, a political analyst at Chulalongkorn University, referring to Thaksin's ouster in a coup.

Mental imagery gives language meaning

words.jpg

David Robson, features editor

WHAT do you think of when you read the phrase "flying pig"? Chances are that a striking image will have fleetingly passed through your mind. Perhaps it's a winged "Pigasus", as imagined by John Steinbeck. Or, if you are a fan of The Simpsons, it might be Homer's precious roast pig launching past Mr Burns's office.

In Louder Than Words, Benjamin Bergen, a cognitive scientist at the University of California, San Diego, builds a strong case that such "embodied simulations" lie at the centre of the brain's processing of language. Every time we hear a word, he argues, it brings to mind sights, sounds, feelings and actions, as if we are experiencing them first-hand. Importantly, what is brought to mind depends on your unique experiences - your flying pig will be very different to mine.

Writers have been working with this principle for thousands of years, of course, but the idea has only recently attracted the focused attention of cognitive scientists, with fascinating results. We take longer to comprehend "I kick" than "I eat", for instance, simply because the neurons that process sensations from the feet are further from the language centres than those handling the mouth. Considering how the brain embodies words - whether or not you have a strongly visual imagination, for example - might even explain a preference for the vivid imagery in Jane Eyre over the wordplay of The Importance of Being Earnest.

Bergen writes with a lightness of touch and a jovial wit. He is particularly captivating when he explains the hoops the brain jumps through to embody mercurial sentences that seem to flip halfway through, such as the Groucho Marx quip that "time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana".

After reading this book, words will never hold quite the same meaning for you again.

Real estate billionaire Wang Shi's divorce and new girlfriend | Danwei

Huaihai Wanbao 30 Oct 12

Having a mistress in China would not normally be front page news. But when you are a 61-year-old famous real estate mogul and renowned entrepreneur and when your new mistress is a pretty, 31-year-old actress ? that?s front page front and centre. Hence all over various front pages in China today are revelations that Wang Shi (??) has divorced his wife for his girlfriend Tian Pujun (???). The Internet in China is well and truly abuzz with the news that the ?old rich and handsome? (???) has a ?new joy? (??).

Wang Shi?(??) is best known as the CEO of Vanke (??), the biggest residential real estate company in China. According to Hebei News, Wang made his first fortune of three million yuan in 1983 by selling cheap corn from northern China to southern China in deals that were facilitated by his father in law?s position as Vice Party Secretary of Guangdong Province. Known as ?China?s?real estate godfather? (????), Wang is also a famous mountaineer, counting Mount Everest among his conquests.

The tweet that set the Internet on fire

According to Shenzhen Evening News (????), the Internet frenzy began on Sunday when a reporter from Caijing magazine (????) posted the following on Sina Weibo, together with the image at left:

?Various sources have now confirmed Wang Shi?s change in marital status. Proceedings for the divorce of Wang Shi and his wife Wang Jiangsui (???) will be completed within the year.?

Online speculation soon became rampant that Wang?s new love is a post-80s generation actress called Tian Pujun (???), who achieved some fame for her role as the wife of Prince Dun in the popular television series Legend of Zhen Huan (???). The two apparently met at the Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business in China, and have been spotted in the US together (where Wang was studying English during the last year). Today?s Shanghai Morning Post included an article headlined ?Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business Denies Acting as Matchmaker?.

Yesterday morning a picture surfaced on Weibo showing Wang and Tian sitting next to each other on an air plane, which the tweeter-photographer confessed he had taken back in January but had refrained from putting online until now. The Wang Shi affair has been the top trending topic on Sina Weibo all day today, and Sina have set up a special topic about it.

With discussion of his supposedly extramarital affairs now a leading topic on the Internet, Wang issued a personal statement asking the public to respect his privacy and denying that he had ever betrayed his family. Yet his new love certainly makes a pretty front page:

New UN "atlas" links climate change, health

GENEVA (AP) ? Two U.N. agencies have mapped the intersection of health and climate in an age of global warming, showing that there are spikes in meningitis when dust storms hit and outbreaks of dengue fever when hard rains come.

Officials said Monday that their "Atlas of Health and Climate" is meant to be a tool for leaders to use to get early warning of disease outbreaks.

Though the data or conclusions aren't necessarily new, the way in which they are presented may sharpen governments' ability to respond to the threats posed by rising temperatures and changing climate.

Since 2005, for example, the atlas shows that the weekly number of cases of meningitis, which is spread by bacteria and germs, has risen when the dry season hits sub-Saharan Africa, where it has killed an estimated 25,000 people over the past 10 years. And since at least 1998, there has been a strong seasonal pattern of dengue fever, transmitted by mosquitoes, during periods of heavy rainfall in tropical and subtropical areas, killing about 15,000 people a year.

The joint project of the World Health Organization and World Meteorological Organization, both based in Geneva, says the likelihood of increasingly frequent heat waves hitting the planet is four to 10 times as often by 2050 ? and they will probably most affect the fast-growing vulnerable populations of aging and urban people particularly in Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

"Many diseases including malaria, dengue, meningitis ? just a few examples ? these are what we call climate-sensitive diseases, because such climate dimensions for rainfall, humidity and temperature would influence the epidemics, the outbreaks, either directly influencing the parasites or the mosquitoes that carry them," said Dr. Margaret Chan, the director-general of the U.N. health agency.

Chan said the data could be used to better manage animals' habitat and ecosystems, which would also make a big difference to people's health because 80 percent of the infectious diseases currently found in humans have come from animals.

WMO Secretary-General Michel Jarraud said the atlas is meant to translate and map information buried in the agencies' technical documents "into something which can be used by the decision-makers directly."

Penn State Track and Field Alumni Golf: Sandy Gave Me a Day Off ...

Note that the Track Alumni Reunion Weekend and Coach Groves Golf Tourney are on the Friday and Saturday May 17, 18, 2013. I have no idea how I messed that one up? The Blog Datum Procurement Specialist picked up that one for me. Much obliged!

Sandy Gave Me a Day Off Work! Maybe 2!

I hope everyone is safe and sound on the East Coast.? I've had contact with several people in the direct path of the storm and everyone seems to be well prepared. There will be effects felt over as large an area as I've ever seen.? The Great Lakes area need to be prepared.? And the Canaan Valley in West Virginia is bracing for 3 feet of snow! I used to XC Ski there in my younger days.? And here's my reminisces of another storm during "the best week of my life".

Coworkers decided it was better to be safe than sorry, so I actually called off a day of work.? I'll run extra on the treadmill as long as the electricity grid holds up (sorry Ron!), but will have to venture outside in the maelstrom if the power goes out like one year ago.

As the storm is predicted to be right on top of my house on Tuesday, I possibly will miss two days of work, which will take me weeks of horribly extra work to catch up, but c'est la vie.

Here's a great photo of the B1G Cross Country Women's start on Sunday from our friend Patrick Davey, a Tennessee alum and as good a photog as I've ever seen.? I'll send him this hat-tip as a way of consoling his frustration on another football season going awry!? It's not like PSU alums don't know about football travails.

Study: Pageant tots deprived of naps, pumped with caffeine ...

You don?t really need me to tell you that the toddler beauty pageant world is messed up. But when I read this press release about new observational research of the show, I was still pretty disturbed.

Martina M. Cartwright, a dietitian and adjunct professor at the University of Arizona, attended two live tapings of the television reality show, ?Toddlers and Tiaras.? She also hung out at many toddler beauty pageants. Her observations are being published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. They are not pleasant.

At competitive pageants, Cartwright frequently noted parents who spent more money than they stood to win if their children finished first. And of course there was the obvious nastiness, the sexualization of baby girls.

In one competition, Cartwright saw a toddler wearing a Playboy bunny costume. She was carried to the stage by her father, who was dressed as Hugh Hefner.

?Everything was based on what these kids look like and the way that these children were displayed or dressed,? Cartwright says. ?They were fully made up; they looked like adult women, pint-size. They were judged on personality, but none spoke a word.?

But there?s another wrinkle I didn?t know about. To keep very young children going hour after hour, parents are jeopardizing their kids? physical health. After a little girl?s face has been painted and her hair elaborately styled, there is the danger of things getting mussed by a nap or rest. So parents deny their children opportunities to rest or sleep. To keep them awake, they give their children stimulants.

Cartwright says she saw several parents giving their toddlers high-caffeine ?energy drinks? and Pixy Stix candy, also known as ?pageant crack.? One mother is quoted as saying, ?We?ve gone through two bags of crack and two cans of energy drink so she can stay up for crowning.?

The practice seemed very common. ?The smell in the hallways was so sweet,? says Cartwright, ?it was like being in a carnival.?

Cartwright doesn?t advocate an outright ban on toddler pageants. But I don?t know. Based on my understanding of developmental psychology, I can?t see how a toddler can properly consent to such a life. A young child has no way to reckon the costs and benefits of participating. If she?s been raised in a pageant environment, she can?t even know what an alternative, normal life, is like.

Even if a little girl isn?t being abused, even if she isn?t being denied rest, sleep, playtime and educational opportunities, even if she isn?t being dosed with dangerous levels of caffeine and sugar, how do we know if she will look back on her participation favorably?

Perhaps when she is older she will decide toddler beauty pageants distort children?s values and contribute to an atmosphere that encourages child exploitation and pedophilia. Maybe she?ll blame pageants for distorting her self-image, for making her feel her worth depends on the way she looks. She?ll wish she hadn?t done it. But she won?t regret her choice, because the choice was made for her.

A toddler doesn?t make informed choices about participating in beauty pageants or appearing on reality television shows.

Is it morally acceptable to turn a blind eye to toddler beauty pageants ? to shrug and say it?s none of our business? I don?t think so. Cartwright describes some pretty disturbing things, and despite years of bad press, the people involved in this bizarre world of toddler exploitation have failed to address the problems. Even Hollywood, which is unregulated by child labor laws, puts official limits on the hours that toddlers can work.

I have hoped that the public outcry against the industry would prompt pageant organizers to regulate themselves. But instead I just see more exploitation, and the specter of defenseless little girls being made the butt of ?boob? jokes by adult comedians.

If it happened on the streets or schoolyard it would be bullying. But when it happens in the popular media it?s just?news.

Can we do better? Can we do something about this problem? Perhaps you, the reader, would like to tell me.

????

Woodinville Easy Tips: How to Improve Efficiency This Winter

?So I heard that energy prices are going down,? said no one ever. With energy prices on the rise and no end in sight, we?re all dreading our monthly utility bills. That?s why people everywhere are looking for cheap and easy ways to make their homes more energy efficient. We?ve put together some simple ideas that are fast and affordable to make your home more efficient this winter. By keeping more of your heat indoors you can use your heater less and potentially save yourself some money.

Insulation

The first thing you should do is climb up into your attic and check the insulation there. Heat naturally rises and will collect in your attic. If your insulation is old or if you have holes in it, you could be leaking all of that heat energy to the outside. Insulation is given an ?R? value that determines its efficiency. Replacing your old insulation with newer, higher rated insulation could help keep more that heat indoors. You can also check the insulation in your floors and in your walls. These are other areas where heat can escape.

Window and Door Frames

Another place where heat can escape is through the frames in your doors and windows. Having your windows and doors sealed is a great way to keep more of that energy inside. There are weather stripping products and indoor sealants that are specifically designed for this application. Particularly important is the door to your attic and the door to your basement. These can be places where heat easily escapes to the outside. There are also thin, transparent seals that can be applied to your windows to keep heat from seeping through the spaces between the glass and the frame.

?Insulate your Water Heater and Pipes

Another way to improve the efficiency of your home is to look at your hot water system. If you have a tank water heater in your basement you might be losing a lot of heat energy there. Your basement can get freezing cold and if your water heater is there, the cold air could be sucking heat out of it. Insulating your heater is a great way to trap more heat inside of it so that it doesn?t have to keep reheating the water. You may also want to think about insulating the water pipes in your house. Not only can this keep more heat in the water as it is en route to your faucet, but it can also potentially prevent damage to your home from frozen pipes.

If you have any questions about increasing the efficiency in your home, contact the heating professionals at?G & S Heating, Cooling & Electric today. We offer comprehensive heating services in?Woodinville and would be more than happy to talk with you about your home heating situation.

Coe reveals Olympic fears that kept him awake at night

LONDON (Reuters) - London Olympics organising committee chairman Sebastian Coe had sleepless nights worrying about possible terrorist attacks during this year's Games, according to his autobiography to be published next month.

Coe, 56, who exuded calm and confidence as the chairman of the committee that organised the hugely successful Games in July and August, tells of his concerns that kept him awake at night.

"I was less concerned about a Twin Towers scenario because there were missiles on tower blocks and Navy Seals in exercise boarding boats on the Thames," he writes in extracts published by The Times on Saturday.

He says though, he was haunted by a "lone wolf" terrorist attack.

"I was haunted by the fear of that when people were celebrating having street parties or watching TV screens in pubs ten deep. That fear never left me.

"I counted off the days, counted off the hours."

In his book he describes meeting Chris Allison, the assistant commissioner of the Metroplitan Police a few days before the Games ended.

"We didn't even need to say what we were thinking. We just looked at each other and I said: 'This isn't done until we've got everybody home safely.' And he said, 'Yeah, I know'."

In an interview with The Times, Coe says he was sitting with his sons in the Olympic Stadium on the last night of the Paralympic Games when it suddenly occurred to him that the venture that had dominated his life for the last 10 years was over.

After the closing ceremony had ended, his sons asked if they could go down on to the track. Thinking of lots of bureaucratic reasons why they could not he was just about to say "no," when he realised it did not matter any more if they did.

He went down to the track with them and said: "As we stood there, it was instinct. I just pulled them both into a huddle and thanked them for the last 10 years."

Asked if he felt guilty at not being around for his young family, he said, "Yes absolutely it was an obsession."

Coe, who won the 1,500 metres gold medal at the 1980 Olympics in Moscow and the 1984 Games in Los Angeles is unopposed in the election for chairman of the British Olympic Association on November7.

His book, "Running My Life - The Autobiography" is due to be published the following day.

da:ns Fest 2012! Notion: Dance Fiction! Oppa Frankenstein! ? For ...

Choy Ka Fai doing the Roboto with someone who's obviously not Joavien Ng, for a pre: Notion: Dance Fiction performance somewhere else. Photo courtesy of The Esplanade.

Earlier this afternoon, Choy Ka Fai stuck some pads on my right arm and left cheek and let rip a few thousand volts of electricity.

I?m exaggerating of course. It was only a slight electrical jolt, but it was enough to make my arm contort involuntarily. And my face is still twitching ever so slightly. I hope the lady in the bus didn?t think I was coming on to her.

But at least I can say that for less than a minute, I became a butoh artist. Sorta. Kinda.

What if you can digitally map out, codify and archive dance movements? And what if, with a tweak of a knob or a press of a button, you can access and enact it?

That?s the premise behind Notion: Dance Fiction, Choy?s fascinating lecture performance that?s part of an ongoing project about muscle memory.

It?s all very Matrix-y. Plug in and voila! Instant Moonwalk.

Armed with his laptops, consoles and this afternoon?s collaborator, choreographer Joavien Ng, Choy presents the preliminary results of this unusual research.

In NDF, he reduces dance to, literally, a physiological tic, a muscle contraction brought about by electroshock. He aligns it to scientific developments stretching all the way back to the 1700s and to forays in contemporary art from artists like Stelarc and Daito Manabe.

Creating a programme that allows him to convert video images of dance pieces into electrical impulses, he sticks aforementioned pads unto his body and ?does? butoh artist Tatsumi Hijikata?s Summer Storm.

And then comes the fun part. He gets Ng to do the same thing. Using samples from his database of performances by contemporary dance choreographers, which are also projected onscreen, Ng does an Yvonne Rainer, a Vaslav Nijinsky, an Isadora Duncan, a Lin Hwai-Min, and even one of her earlier pieces.

Insider quips abound. A technical glitch during her Akram Khan moment sees her ?looped? (?The file is corrupted,? says Choy. A joke or a jibe?). She does a Jerome Bel?which basically entails doing nothing.

And then Choy complicates things, cutting and pasting, combining pieces: Rainer meets Pichet Klunchun, a Rainer, Klunchun and Merce Cunningham hybrid. A Frankenstein of dance.

Human agency is erased as dance becomes patterns filtered through machines. For some, the possibility is an ethical and artistic nightmare (what happens to genius? To chance?) For others, it?s a glimpse at a gamechanging breakthrough (I can become the next Messi! We can all become the next Messi!)

It?s a lovely debate to have, and indeed, a number of folks during the post-show discussion brought up questions having to do with one or the other.

But there?s something else going on here. If the title isn?t enough of a giveaway, the contrast between the crudeness and jerkiness of Choy?s earlier demonstrations and Ng?s rather fluid reenactments of some complicated movements should be enough of a hint.

You don?t have to try it out to see that right now, this proposition is really one for the future, but since I did, I?d have to point out that it can get pretty uncomfortable. Ng would have to be a masochist to go through all that. Heck, I don?t think the body?s even prepared for such abuse.

And that?s where the coolness of the piece really lies?that the two?have deadpanned their way through NDF, talking about and discussing muscle memory and all that scientific stuff, pushing a case for it, while at the same time interrogating it.

Seen in that light, NDF debunks its own arguments and proves its exact reverse: in the end, Ng combines all these different portions into one piece, without any outside assistance.

And through it all, we, the audience, are not so much deceived as made complicit by our very act of viewing in this continuous shuffling between fact and fiction.

While there is a twist to the proceedings, NDF is far from being a ?punchline? work. When it quotes the Rainer piece ?The Mind Is A Muscle?, you understand it not only in relation to the debate about where the art of dance really comes from, but also in relation to you sitting there and shaping your own cognitive experience of the show. Inasmuch as Choy and Ng are piecing together these mini-choreographies, aided by technology or otherwise, you are likewise doing the same thing.

Shocking, isn?t it?

How To Get On Top With Search Engine Optimization | Internet ...

Most website owners who are just starting up are more than happy to simply market using paid-for ads and articles, and they simply cross their fingers that these methods will be effective. This might work for some businesses, but it is an incomplete strategy that will allow other businesses to steal your thunder. By using the advice in this article, you can improve your website?s visibility.

Consider adding a blog to your business or corporate website to add a personalized touch, and encourage the company?s owner or CEO to become involved by blogging. Visitors to your site will be excited to get information directly from the person at the top of the company.

Dedicate a webpage to each keyword phrase. Confusion is the inevitable result when you try to cram a lot of different keywords into a single page. Keeping your focus on one topic with good content, will have your readers coming back more frequently. Search engine optimization is overshadowed by a loyal readership.

A good rule on META description tags that you can do is to be sure that every page is unique. The same meta tag on different pages may be read by search engines as duplicate content, lowering your ranking.

Keep your list of links short and organized. The links you place in your copy should flow naturally. Link pages are not appreciated by readers or search engines. Pages created with attention given to the formatting, and with the inclusion of text, will make the page look more professional and will give search engines context for better ranking.

To get the best results when optimizing your site for search engines, you will need to learn how to write in SEO style. This means striking a delicate balance between including the keyword enough for the search engines to notice while not making the text sound awkward. As the search engines do their job by finding keywords and putting a value on their density, you will find your rankings improving.

When you create your own search engine, you control how specific or general its results are. If you are attempting to really optimize your search engine, utilize set instructions that yield useful links for the keywords in question.

It is essential to use search engines to help potential buyers find your website. If your site is spider friendly, you?ll get better search engine results. Make sure you tag the images on your site, because spiders are only able to read text. Be sure to write a description that is rich with keywords.

Content on your site is an essential part of search engine optimization. While it should be a good length and keyword focused, you should also make sure that it is unique and well written. It is also important to ensure your content is grammatically correct. To improve your search engine rankings, be sure that your site has plenty of relevant content.

Search engine rankings are improved this way. Keep in mind that in the search results, the description from your meta tag will appear beneath the link to your website. You can use this to your advantage by creating a strong description that gives people plenty of incentive to visit your site. Check to see if your content management software makes it easy for you to write a meta description on the same page you create your content on.

Make sure to do your research before choosing a company to promote the site. Research their skills and experience, what SEO methods they use and what their charges are. Ask to look at some of their earlier work, or talk to a few of their old clients. Trustworthy companies will not have an issue with providing this information to you.

To attract the kind of audience you want, include surveys and games on your site. People love taking surveys to find out what kind of consumer they are, or which style is right for them. Ask them about their shopping habits and interest. You will learn a lot about your customers and they will enjoy themselves when they take the survey.

Make all of your titles unique and interesting, even if the content is similar. These titles should be short and each word should be useful. The first couple words in your title are the most important.

When your niche has an audience who regularly read articles from established e-zines, contribute articles to those e-zines and back link your published work to your site. EZines have archived lists of articles with active links so even if time has passed, since you published your article consumers can still find them and use the information to access your site.

You might actually be able to get some traffic to your site while your site is ranked on the back pages, but your traffic would exponentially increase as soon as you started to implement the proper SEO tactics. By using the tips you?ve just read in this article, you can start to raise the profile of your website.

Hurricane Sandy expected to make landfall early Tuesday

SHIP BOTTOM, N.J.?

With much of the Eastern Seaboard in the path of a rare behemoth storm, residents of the nation's most densely populated corridor contemplated whether to heed dire warnings of torrential rain, high winds and up to 2 feet of snow.

"You know how many times they tell you, 'This is it, it's really coming and it's really the big one,' and then it turns out not to be?" said Alice Stockton-Rossini as she packed up to leave her home a few hundred yards from the ocean in Ship Bottom, N.J.

"I'm afraid people will tune it out because of all the false alarms before, and the one time you need to take it seriously, you won't. This one might be the one."

Hurricane Sandy ? upgraded again Saturday just hours after forecasters said it had weakened to a tropical storm ? was barreling north from the Caribbean and was expected to make landfall early Tuesday near the Delaware coast, then hit two winter weather systems as it moves inland, creating a hybrid monster storm.

Even if Sandy loses strength and makes landfall as something less than a hurricane, the combined storm was expected to bring misery to a huge section of the East. An 800-mile wide swath of the country could see 50 mph winds regardless of Sandy's strength.

Experts said the storm could be wider and stronger than Irene, which caused more than $15 billion in damage, and could rival the worst East Coast storm on record. On Saturday morning, forecasters said hurricane-force winds of 75 mph could be felt 100 miles away from the storm's center.

Up and down the coast, people were cautioned to be prepared for days without electricity. Jersey Shore beach towns began issuing voluntary evacuations and protecting boardwalks. Atlantic City casinos made contingency plans to close, and officials advised residents of flood-prone areas to stay with family or be ready to leave. Several governors declared states of emergency. Airlines said to expect cancellations and waived change fees for passengers who want to reschedule.

"Be forewarned," Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy. "Assume that you will be in the midst of flooding conditions, the likes of which you may not have seen at any of the major storms that have occurred over the last 30 years."

In North Carolina's Outer Banks, light rain was falling Saturday and winds were building up to a predicted 30 to 50 mph. A steady stream of campers and other vehicles hauling boats were leaving the low-lying islands for the mainland. Residents feared a temporary bridge built after Irene last year poked a new inlet through the island could be washed out again, severing the only road off Hatteras Island.

In Ship Bottom, N.J., Russ Linke was taking no chances Saturday. He and his wife secured the patio furniture, packed the bicycles into the pickup truck and headed off the island.

"I've been here since 1997, and I never even put my barbecue grill away during a storm, but I am taking this one seriously," he said. "They say it might hit here; that's about as serious as it can get."

At a Home Depot in Freeport, on New York's Long Island, Bob Notheis bought sawhorses to get his furniture off the floor inside his home.

"I'm just worried about how bad it's going to be with the tidal surge," he said. "Irene was kind of rough on me and I'm just trying to prepare."

After Irene left millions without power, utilities were taking no chances and were lining up extra crews and tree-trimmers. Wind threatened to topple power lines, and trees that still have leaves could be weighed down by snow and fall over if the weight becomes too much.

New York City began precautions for an ominous but still uncertain forecast. No decision had been made on whether any of the city's public transportation outlets would be shut, despite predictions that a sudden shift of the storm's path could cause a surge of 3 to 6 feet in the subways.

The subway system was completely shuttered during Irene, the first such shutdown ever for weather-related reasons. Irene largely missed the city, but struck other areas hard.

In upstate New York, Richard Ball was plucking carrots, potatoes, beets and other crops from the ground as quickly as possible Friday. Ball was still shaky from Irene, which scoured away soil, ruined crops and killed livestock.

Farmers were moving tractors and other equipment to high ground, and some families pondered moving furniture to upper stories in their homes.

"The fear we have a similar recipe to Irene has really intensified anxieties in town," Ball said.

Indonesia arrests 11 in US Embassy terror plot

AP Photo/Jefta

An Indonesian police officer stands guard at the door of the house of a suspected terrorist after a raid Saturday in Jakarta, Indonesia.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

JAKARTA, Indonesia ??Indonesia's anti-terror squad arrested 11 people suspected of planning a range of attacks on domestic and foreign targets including the U.S. Embassy and a site near the Australian Embassy, police said Saturday.?

The suspects were arrested in raids Friday and Saturday in four provinces, national police spokesman Maj. Gen. Suhardi Alius said.

He said the suspects belonged to a new group called the Harakah Sunni for Indonesian Society, or HASMI.

"From evidence found at the scene, we believe that this group was well prepared for serious terror attacks," Alius said.

A U.S. State Department spokesperson told NBC News, "We have seen the reports, but cannot comment as this is an ongoing Indonesian security investigation."

Police seized a number of bombs, explosive materials, a bomb-making manual and ammunition, Alius said. They also found a 3-kilogram (6.6-pound) gas cylinder filled with highly explosive material, which had been assembled at a house in the East Java town of Madiun. Videos and images of attacks on Muslims in various parts of the world were also recovered, he said.?

Watch World News videos on NBCNews.com

Alius said the group planned to target the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta and a plaza near the Australian Embassy and the local office of U.S. mining giant Freeport-McMoRan. It also planned to attack the U.S. Consulate in Surabaya and the headquarters of a special police force in Central Java, he said.

It was unclear how far the plans had advanced.

Alius said police are still investigating whether the group has ties with established terrorist organizations such as Jemaah Islamiyah. An investigator who spoke in condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to provide information to the media said HASMI's apparent leader, Abu Hanifah, was a Jemaah Islamiyah sympathizer.

Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim-majority nation, has been battling terrorists since the 2002 bombings in Bali by militants linked to Jemaah Islamiyah which killed 202 people, mostly foreign tourists.

Subsequent attacks have claimed more than 50 people, mostly Indonesians. The government has arrested more than 700 suspected terrorists and killed dozens more in an attempt to root out militants.

Earlier this month, police warned of a terrorist threat in Bali targeting a ceremony commemorating the 10th anniversary of the bombings. The country's security alert was raised to its highest level.

Last month, police arrested 10 Islamist militants and seized a dozen homemade bombs from a group suspected of planning suicide attacks against security forces and plotting to blow up the Parliament building. The alleged bomb maker turned himself in to police while wearing an empty suicide vest.

Recent terror attacks in the country have been carried out by individuals or small groups and have targeted security forces and local "infidels" instead of Westerners, with less deadly results. The arrests announced Saturday appear to be the first in recent years to involve a group that allegedly planned to target foreign facilities.?

NBC's Catherine Chomiak contributed to this report.?

The Friend Effect ? The Husky Headline

By: Meilan Solly

Have you ever talked about a friend behind their back? Can anyone honestly say they haven?t? Saying bad things about your best friends when they?re not there isn?t exactly one of the Seven Deadly Sins, but it is a definite step towards becoming a toxic friend. According to three freshmen ? Emilly Grueso, Jordan Stinger, and Taylor Hover ? toxic friends are backstabbers. They tell other people?s secrets, and they?re ?two-faced and judgmental.? ?Liam Marshall-Brown, a senior, defines a toxic friend as ?someone you think you can trust who goes behind your back.?

According to a Today.com article entitled ?Toxic Friends? 8 in 10 people endure poisonous pals,? 84% of women and 75% of men have had toxic friends. This idea is supported by Stinger, who says, ?Most friendships are [toxic].? Various types of bad friends include the ?narcissist,? who is self-obsessed; the ?chronic downer,? who?s always depressing; and the ?underminer,? who treats other people?s problems or accomplishments like they?re nothing. Friends who possess these characteristics negatively impact relationships because, according to Psychology Today, ?they take and you give, [and] they consistently disappoint you.?

The difference between toxic friendships in men and women might seem small if one looks at statistics, but Mark Armstrong, a junior, says, ?Guys? friendships are about sports and similar activities, whereas girls? friendships are more about feelings.? David Frederick, a professor of psychology at the University of Hawaii, expands on the idea, explaining that ?women?s friendships tend to be more about intimacy?the downside is that leaves them more open to attack.?

If toxic friendships are so very horrible, why do people continue them? Friends are, according to Marshall-Brown, people ?you can trust and enjoy being around,? and toxic friends obviously don?t fit those requirements. However, according to Today.com, 83% of people stay in toxic relationships simply because it?s hard to end a friendship. ?Grueso adds that ?even if [a friendship] is toxic, [people] still think they?re friends.? Stinger says that if your toxic friend also happens to be your best friend, ending the relationship can leave you friendless.

Toxic friends have been around for a long time, and it?s likely they?re here to stay, especially with technology keeping everyone connected 24/7. This doesn?t mean, though, that once you?re in a toxic relationship you?re stuck. ?Talk it out first, and if it doesn?t work then stop being friends,? Stinger advises. Another way of handling a toxic friendship is best explained by journalist David Hochman, who says, ?I stopped focusing on the toxic part of the relationship and started focusing on what?s good. Now we just play tennis together and it?s working.?

Clearwire moves forward with Huawei in network upgrades after federal consultation

China's Huawei has found itself followed by a cloud of suspicion from governments and national security agencies, both in America, and futher afield. A recent announcement from Clearwire stating it will use the firms hardware in a network upgrade, however, could see some sunshine of confidence finally poking through. Reuters reports that the service provider consulted several technical departments from various federal agencies before making the decision. Clearwire already uses some Huawei equipment in its infrastructure, and it's in these areas that the hardware will be used for upgrades. The firm went on to assure that, overall, less than 5 percent of its LTE budget involves Huawei gear, and irrespective of origin, all vendors are subject to approval from US government approved third parties.

Stroke survivors who smoke raise risk of more strokes, heart attack, death

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? Stroke survivors who smoke put themselves at a greater risk of additional strokes, heart attack or death than those who never smoked, according to new research in the American Heart Association's journal Stroke.

Those who quit smoking before their stroke also had less risk of poorer outcomes than current smokers, researchers found.

Researchers in Melbourne, Australia, tracked 1,589 patients who experienced a first or recurrent stroke in 1996-99. They followed them for 10 years, using medical records and in-person and telephone interviews, and tracked demographics, deaths, recurrent strokes and heart attacks.

Compared to those who never smoked:

  • Those who smoked when they had a stroke were 30 percent more likely to have a poor outcome.
  • Among those who survived the first 28 days after stroke, current smokers had a 42 percent higher risk of poorer outcomes.
  • Ex-smokers had an 18 percent higher risk of poorer outcomes.

Compared to past smokers:

  • Among those who survived the first 28 days after stroke, current smokers had a 23 percent higher risk of poorer outcomes during the 10 years.

"This research provides fresh incentive to quit smoking now or never start because it shows smokers fare far worse after strokes than non-smokers," said Amanda Thrift, Ph.D., the study's lead researcher and professor of epidemiology for the Department of Medicine in the Southern Clinical School at Monash University in Clayton, Victoria, Australia.

In the study, those living in disadvantaged areas were much more likely to smoke, with 52 percent of current smokers belonging to the most disadvantaged group, compared to 31 percent of those who never smoked.

"We also found smoking had its greatest impact on younger patients," Thrift said. "The people who smoked in our study were younger, more often male, and more often from a disadvantaged background. Although we want everyone to give up smoking, targeting this group could yield greater benefits with fewer dollars spent."

The study focused on patients who survived the most common type of stroke: an ischemic stroke (caused by blood clot). Researchers didn't link smoking to poorer long-term outcomes for patients whose stroke was caused by bleeding within the brain (intracerebral hemorrhage ), possibly due to a small sample size.

Previous studies, which have been shorter, had a smaller sample size or were less comprehensive, have provided inconsistent results on smoking's role on long-term outcomes after a stroke.

Stroke is the fourth-leading cause of death and the leading cause of adult disability in the United States. Someone in America has a stroke about every 40 seconds.
