Instead of the rain that locals in Herzegovina were hoping for, fresh winds started blowing on Monday, helping forest fires spread and endangering isolated homes.
The toughest fires were blazing around the towns of Mostar, Jablanica, Konjic and Trebinje. The Bosnian Army sent two helicopters to help put out fires from the air around Konjic and Trebinje while soldiers were engaged helping locals fight the blaze from the ground.
Russia has sent a helicopter to help locals tackle blazes near Mostar, as Bosnian Army helicopters were being repaired while the fires engulfed nearby forests.
On Prenj mountain, two mountain cottages were torched by fire while the village of Glogosnica, near Jablanica in Herzegovina, was also in danger as flames approached within a few hundreds metres of local houses.
The fires around the towns of Bileca, Trebinje, Gacko and Ljubinje in Herzegovina also came close to some houses but were partly under control.
Elsewhere in Bosnia, Monday's rain extinguished many fires, though a few smaller ones were still burning in the eastern part of the country.

Perhaps you?ve seen the film or at least the overplayed cigarette lighting scene on an Oscars telecast.? Bette Davis as Charlotte Vale, heiress to be from a prominent Boston family, has a tragic nervous breakdown, gets shipped off to a sanitarium, loses 50 lbs. and is handed the offer of a lifetime. ?No, it?s not a part on The Biggest Loser but a cruise. The itinerary is to glamorous and seductive South America where, on a shore excursion, she meets the love of her life.? I forgot to mention a dramatic detail ? she?s sailing incognito as the society playgirl whose passage (and glamorous wardrobe) she inherited in the deal. The cruise sets the stage for a 20th Century Fox love affair with sweeping capes, big hats and spectator pumps. It doesn?t exactly steal the limelight from the lovers, but it sure manages to take center stage in a supporting role, with shuffleboard games on the promenade, cocktails in the swanky lounge and panoramic views of the ports of call.
As a fan of old Hollywood, I couldn?t help but recall a few scenes as I boarded the Aegean Odyssey for my first cruise. The compact sailing vessel (198 staterooms, average 350 passengers), was moored in Venice?s Giudecca Canal and set to sail the following evening.? No, I hadn?t brought along my tux or even one Panama hat, just a baseball cap, sunglasses and a wardrobe that took me days to figure out (with no help from a studio wardrobe department).? The Mediterranean itinerary deserved a nomination ? the ancient towns of Pula and Split along the Adriatic coast; the Croatian island of Korcula, haunting and medieval; Dubrovnik, a fairy tale walled city; then into the deep blue Aegean with stops at the Ionian island of Corfu, Monemvasia in the Pelopenese, and finally Rethymno in Crete, the gateway to an ancient Minoan civilization.
I opted to disembark there leaving before the end of the full itinerary, even though it was sailing on to the fabulous island of Santorini, followed by Naxos and Limnos and ending at the exotic city of Istanbul. Apart from the allure of the far-flung destinations, the purpose of this cruise, one of the hottest trends in cruising right now, was to offer guests an enrichment experience. What drew me to Voyages to Antiquity in the first place you might be wondering since I?m hardly scholarly although I know my way around a library.? Having picked Athens as my first big trip out of college, I was a sucker for Greek culture and the Mediterranean food and lifestyle at the outset.? I?d even bought some designer worry beads to bring back home and display (yes, I had seen a photo of Jackie Onassis with them on her Fifth Avenue coffee table). Mine were the biggest ones I could find so I could flaunt my adventures and they were lavender, to boot. Even at twenty-one, I was fully aware of the mystique of Greek.
But something else had egged me on. I?d spent nine months enjoying ?Anne Marie Simons? charming account of her retirement with her husband to Aix-en-Provence, near the Mediterranean coast of France. Like me, the couple had fallen in love with the lifestyle, albeit a slightly different one in France than in Greece. The book, Taking Root in Provence, made me realize that in retirement your dreams sometimes come true and Anne-Marie succeeded in convincing me to revisit the place where I, myself, had long ago fallen in love. Then I got hold of Barry Frangipane?s The Venice Experiment, which told the na?ve story of a Florida couple?s love affair with Venice. The author, Italian by heritage, had decided to move there with his wife and change their lives. Their experience took me back to how taken I was with Venice, too. Years had passed since I?d visited and when I saw that the Aegean Odyssey was departing from there, I felt it was a chance to reconnect with it.
Four tenets of a plan were now in place ? a cruise, Mediterranean culture, Venice and Greece ? and these became the foundation for an incredible leisure experience.? I finalized it by deciding to linger a little longer in Crete, an island I?d heard was amazing. The pre-high season timing meant fewer crowds on shore and a more intimate experience and after touring the stylish Aegean Odyssey?s decks, I couldn?t wait.? My balcony stateroom was cozy and the smile flashing on my steward Ronaldo?s face when I boarded signaled great service and attention. I?d heard that VTA had high standards and offered impeccable food and wines (practically the norm with cruises these days but in this case serving regional foods and wines to further immerse guests in the destinations).
Little did I know how much I would ultimately enjoy the time at sea. On that first night when we headed out of port, I watched the exotically romantic Venetian landmarks passing in the twilight as we sailed out of the canal, one of the special ?cruise moments? to remember. Settling into one of the deckchairs on my small balcony, it was time to gauge how the movement would affect me. ?I invested in sea bands on a friend?s recommendation even though for the most part, our Captain, Roland Andersson, delivered a smooth ride for much of the time at sea. Venice?s fantasy of sumptuous buildings hooked me again and even though a persistent spring drizzle darkened all the photos I?d be posting to Facebook ? the winding, narrow streets and monumental structures that seem to float along the surface of the Grand Canal were unforgettable.
With almost two full days there to acclimate we were happily able to take advantage of Venice?s amazing culinary scene, too. I can honestly say that the memory of Osteria 1518 won?t be fading soon.? Tucked on a little street facing Campo San Basilio at the entrance to the maritime station where the AO was docked, we devoured a lasagnadi pesce (my first) with local fish from the Venetian lagoon and generous amounts of vino blanco from the Veneto for lunch.? The restaurant sported a treasure chest of old Hollywood memorabilia and film posters ? a connection again to that film and the owner and his wife?s passion.? When I saw Marilyn Monroe posing in The Seven Year Itch in the corner, I knew we?d made a find.? The meal that first day was so good that we went back for dinner the next, something I?ve never done before, and it was only later after three Bellinis at Harry?s Dolci across the canal that we realized we had to hustle to make the 10 pm sailing. ?This was the start of a special week for me and when the engines started revving I felt a little thrill.
The next six days opened a window into the origins and genius of ancient civilizations as we toured Unesco World Heritage towns and sites, each with a completely different personality. The daily journeys were not only about history but how connected Venice was to the landscape of this part of Europe. ?The Greek island of Corfu in the Ionian Sea had been on my wish list for as long as I can remember and after strolling the winding streets of Corfu Town we grabbed a table at a taverna on Theotoki Square and watched the kids playing soccer over ouzos and a long lunch. We had plenty of time to chill as we had a full day to explore this island, formerly occupied by the Venetians, with its Old Fortress rising majestically from a cliff and surrounded by a fairytale moat.? Again, our only regret was not seeing it in sunshine as the rain kept-up, and soon everyone was taking cover in cafes, drinking caf? frappes and ouzos. Coffee culture in a Greek town at any time of the day is something to experience and I?m not talking Starbuck?s, either. When lunch finally finished, we ambled along the Liston, Corfu town?s marble pedestrian promenade lined with trendy cafes hung with ornate iron chandeliers that beckoned for a capuccino. ?The majestic story-book colonnade built in the 1800?s to mimic Paris? Rue de Rivoli stretched for blocks and it seemed like most of the townsfolk were keeping dry in the cafes and cherishing moments spent together. This was what I wanted to rediscover most ? appreciating the moment as it?s happening and not thinking about tomorrow.
We celebrated back onboard the AO in the Charleston Lounge with a Corfu Crush, the day?s special cocktail (a heady mix of vodka, Galliano and orange juice). The AO?s three bars had devised a special cocktail of the day (at a recession price of $5) that cleverly married with the port of call. The Galliano in the Crush, an Italian liqueur from the Mediterranean town of Livorno which had a strong Greek connection in the 19th century, reminded me of the thread that weaves its way throughout Mediterranean food and drink. With each night?s arrival of the AO?s Journal of Daily Events, I discovered I had a peculiar interest in studying the planning that goes into making people feel good.?? That was one of the things I took away from the Aegean Odyssey experience.? Even though this cruise was not nightlife focused, every night the lounge would fill up with thrill seekers and both the Libre Duo and the Caf? Concerto Trio delivered great shows that rivaled the big city cabaret acts.
By the time we docked in Rethymno, the last port for me and my jumping off point, I?d made both friends and alliances in the course of the week.? I was sad to leave the Aegean Odyssey behind in spite of the bright sunshine that greeted the ship in Crete.? In such a short time I had reconnected with the pleasures of roaming the Mediterranean and had discovered things that would have been impossible had I not been sailing.? I?d also opened up a window on what?s it?s like to cruise on a smaller ship, especially one with an experiential agenda.? I took away memories that will be hard to replicate.? And thanks to Mother Nature, I never even got to try the AO?s fabulous pool but like ?C. Vale of the Boston Vales?, I did get to share a Cointreau on the rocks with someone special.

LONDON (AP) ? The Olympics have Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern games. The Paralympics have Sir Ludwig Guttmann.
Guttmann, a Jewish neurosurgeon who fled Nazi Germany, pioneered athletic competition as therapy for patients with spinal injuries and organized an archery competition for 16 patients at Britain's Stoke Mandeville hospital in 1948. From this humble start have come the Paralympic Games, which this week will bring more than 4,000 athletes from around the world to London.
"The Guttmann story is massive," said Olympic historian Martin Polley. "He was the one who linked rehab to competitive sport."
This month has been Guttmann's moment, what with a BBC film about his life, "The Best of Men," an exhibition at the Jewish Museum in London and his daughter, Eve Loeffler, being named mayor of the athletes village ? a sort of ambassador in chief who welcomes the participants for games that start Wednesday and end Sept. 9.
It follows a resurgence of interest in Guttmann, who escaped in the late 1930s and settled in Britain, where his research on treating spinal patients drew the attention of the government. Guttmann began working with injured soldiers at Stoke Mandeville hospital, just north of London, during World War II ? a time when suffering a spinal injury was considered a death sentence. Patients were discouraged from moving, leading to secondary infections from bed sores or from pneumonia.
Known for an authoritarian streak and his stubborn insistence on changing the status quo, Guttmann swept into the hospital and took patients off sedation, which had been administered to make them comfortable. But Guttmann was having none of that. No one was going to be comfortable.
"One patient told me 'I'm waiting for God almighty to take me up," the Times of London reported Guttmann as saying at a conference in 1962. "I told him 'While you are waiting, you can do some work'."
He made the patients sit up and work muscles. Seeking to keep them motivated, he hit upon competition as a way to make them work harder. He tried wheelchair field hockey, but when that became too violent, he got the patients involved in wheelchair basketball, Loeffler said.
It was tough and demanding, but grateful patients nicknamed him "Poppa." They were still paralyzed. But many lived ? and carried out Guttmann's wish that they become taxpayers.
Loeffler said her father was marked by his past. Many of his relatives perished in Auschwitz. He was driven, intent to give back to the country that had given his family refuge.
"I think that's another thing that made him work so hard," she said. "He was Hitler's gift to this country in a way, and he was determined to be a good British citizen."
On the same day that London opened its 1948 Olympics, Guttmann organized a competition for wheelchair athletes, which he called the Stoke Mandeville Games. They involved 16 patients taking part in archery. From those humble origins, the Paralympics have grown into a festival of sports involving 4,200 athletes from 166 teams. Though smaller than the Olympics ? which had more than twice the number of athletes ? London's event represents the largest field ever for the games.
The London event ? the first to have come as a result of a joint bid from the host city ? have also benefited from greater integration with the Olympics, particularly in terms of marketing and organization. London essentially connected the rings to the Agitos, the Paralympic symbol of three circling arcs ? a move that helped also spread the fairy dust of attention that the Olympics receive to the Paralympics as well. Queen Elizabeth II agreed to open the event, a reflection of their importance to the country.
Some 2.3 million tickets have been sold, the most ever, many to Britons new to Paralympic sport but who wanted to get an opportunity to see the glittering new stadiums and experience the excitement of first class sporting competition.

South Essex College, in Nethermayne, which is set to be bulldozed as part of a ?30million revamp, has a huge playing field and a sports centre, which is used by residents and students seven days a week.
Residents say it?s ironic the current college campus has the official Olympic rings displayed in front of the building, yet the sports fields could be concreted over if plans for up tom 850 homes go ahead. Under the scheme, the college will be moved to Market Square, in the town centre, and would see student numbers double to 2,000.
It would offer a wider range of courses, with new subjects including games technology, forensics and animal sciences.
Tom Clarke, 52, of Rantree Fold, Basildon, a neighbour of the college, said he is disappointed the council is supporting the plans.
He said: ?The loss of the huge playing field and the sports centre is terrible. There is no green space being included in the plans for the new college.
?Residents living nearby don?t see how we are going to cope with these new homes. There is not enough infrastructure to deal with it. The sports centre is well used by students and the public alike. With the Prime Minister saying we need to keep our open spaces, and with those Olympic rings out the front, it?s ironic so much green space is going to be lost.?
The new campus will be funded by the sales of up to 850 homes on land at Dry Street and the current college site. But Basildon Council leader Tony Ball , who backs the plans, says the new college is pivotal in kick-starting the future of the town?s young people as well as the economy.
He said: ?We have looked at these college plans in a lot of depth and the students will not miss out on sports opportunities. ?They will have Gloucester Park as the nearest open space, which we want to make into a city park, and students will use the Sporting Village, which has great opportunities. We see the new college as pivotal to Basildon?s future, and when we have all these extra students in the town, it?s going to help the shops because they will be spending money. "This drug makes women stupid," said Etingen, who claimed having seen these symptoms in about dozen female patients.
According to the WSJ, Pfizer said that Lipitor had been tested in 400 trials and has a track record of safe and effective use in over 145 million patient years, none of which shows a causal link between the drug and memory loss. The company added that the evidence comes from a variety of sources and not from "anecdotal inferences by individual providers with a limited data pool".

There are many doctors, and cardiologists in particular, who are not worried about these stories. For them, the risks are very small compared to the benefits of statins.
Antonio Gotto, past president of the American Heart Association and currently dean of the Weill-Cornell Medical School, told the WSJ:
"I would hate to see people frightened off taking statins because they think it's going to cause memory loss."
Part of the difficulty for doctors is pinning down exactly what constitutes thinking and memory problems, and distinguishing an effect of one drug from what could be a gradual effect from a separate unrelated cause, for instance as an age progressive condition or side effect from other drugs.

The rumour mill is suggesting that Apple is looking at unveiling its iPhone 5 on September 12, with a launch date just a few weeks later. Apple's iPhone sales have been poor over the last quarter as users wait to upgrade to the new device, which is expected to be a generational step change, complete with a new version of iOS.
The new Nokia Lumia range is a key launch for Nokia, which ditched its proprietary Symbian smartphone OS to join Microsoft's Windows Phone team - but failed to see any traction in the marketplace against Samsung's Google Android and Apple's iPhone devices.
Windows Phone 8 is expected to be a key generational step for both Microsoft and Nokia, and will integrate tightly with its Windows 8/Windows RT software which launches on October 26. Charge density waves improve our understanding of the zero-resistance transport of electricity and could explain an unusual interplay of superconducting and magnetic materials

Whether a material conducts electricity without losses is not least a question of the right temperature. In future it may be possible to make a more reliable prediction for high-temperature superconductors. These materials lose their resistance if they are cooled with liquid nitrogen, which is relatively easy to handle. An international team, in which physicists of the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart played a crucial role, has now discovered that this form of superconductivity competes with charge density waves, i.e. with a periodically fluctuating distribution of the charges. Since the physicists did not previously take account of this competition in their models, their calculations of the transition temperature, where superconductivity sets in, remained inaccurate. In further work, the researchers at the Stuttgart Max Planck Institute have gained insights into how superconducting materials interact with magnetic ones. They observed that the electronic properties affect crystal vibrations to a greater extent than was to be expected. This effect could help to control material properties such as superconductivity or thermoelectricity.
If electricity from high-power offshore wind farms or even large-scale solar parks in the Sahara is to be distributed to consumers in Germany in future, quite a bit of energy will be lost in the long power lines. Superconducting cables could prevent this if cooling them does not consume more energy than they help to save. Bernhard Keimer and his colleagues at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart want to identify materials that deserve the name high-temperature superconductor both in practical terms and also in terms of our usual perception of temperature. To do this they first have to understand how superconductivity works in these materials and how it can be influenced; these materials are known as high-temperature superconductors, even though they lose their resistance at temperatures which make a Siberian winter seem almost mild. The Stuttgart-based physicists have now taken a further step down this road in two current publications.
According to one of their discoveries we can probably consider ourselves lucky that high-temperature superconductivity - a property which remains promising despite its present disadvantages - exists at all. "It is obviously down to a fortunate coincidence," says Bernhard Keimer, Director at the Stuttgart Max Planck Institute. This is at least suggested by the observations of the international team that includes not only Bernhard Keimer and his colleagues, but also scientists at the Politecnico di Milano, the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility Grenoble, the University of British Columbia in Canada and further research institutions.
Superconductivity beats the charge density waves in a close competition
The researchers discovered that the superconductivity in one type of copper oxide ceramic competes with a state in which a charge density wave forms. Physicists have known about such charge density waves for decades from two-dimensional materials such as the niobium selenides, for example. Here, the conduction electrons do not distribute uniformly across the crystal like in a metal. On the contrary, they form a regular pattern of regions in which they concentrate to a greater or lesser extent.
"We did not expect the charge density waves in the superconducting cuprates, because they destroy the superconductivity," says Bernhard Keimer. Instead of concentrating at regular intervals to a greater or lesser extent, the electrons in superconductors join up to form Cooper pairs which can slip through a crystal with zero resistance. Accordingly, the researchers observed the charge patterns only above the transition temperature, the temperature at which the material becomes superconducting.
The regions where charge density waves formed initially expanded as the researchers cooled the material down to the transition temperature, however. As soon as they reached the transition temperature at minus 213 degrees Celsius, the charge density waves suddenly disappeared and superconductivity prevailed.
"Superconductivity only just prevailed in this competition," explains Bernhard Keimer. "If the advantages were distributed slightly differently, there would possibly be no superconductivity at all."
Charge density waves explain why calculated transitions temperatures were too high
The team of researchers tracked down the charge density waves by scanning yttrium and neodymium barium cuprates of the composition (Y,Nd)Ba2Cu3O6+x with the aid of resonant X-ray diffraction. This provided them with exclusive information on the electrons which found it hard to decide whether they wanted to form a wave or look for a partner so that, together, they could slip more easily through their crystal. The physicists in Bernhard Keimer's group are now going to perform these measurements on other high-temperature superconductors as well. They want to find out whether all these materials are in electronic competition.
In addition, the researchers want to take account of the conflict between the two electronic states in their theoretical model of superconductivity. "We can already compute the transition temperature of a material quite well with this model, but still end up slightly too high," says Bernhard Keimer. "The competition with the charge density wave explains this discrepancy so that our predictions should become more accurate in the future."
Superconductivity can be affected by magnetism
Charge density waves possibly also explain an observation which his team made recently in a different project. A high-temperature superconductor was also instrumental here. It also was composed of yttrium, barium and copper oxide and is described by the formula YBa2Cu3O7, or YBCO for short. The researchers now combined this ceramic with a magnetic material comprising lanthanum, calcium and manganese oxide, which obeys the formula La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 (or LCMO). They stacked up the two substances to form a superlattice, a sandwich of layers only a few nanometres thick, and they had a clear aim in doing this.
"In the meantime we assume that the Cooper pairs in high-temperature superconductors form due to magnetic interactions," explains Bernhard Keimer. "If this is the case, superconductivity should be affected by magnetism in order to increase the transition temperature." The special form of magnetism in the LCMO may not be suitable for this, however, because this material is ferromagnetic, i.e. the magnetic moments of the individual atoms all align in one direction, as in iron. And this form of magnetism breaks up the Cooper pairs, thus harming the superconductivity, and decreases the transition temperature. This material is good for investigating how the transition temperature reacts to the magnetism, however, and for the detailed basis for its effect.
And indeed the researchers observed what they had expected: in a sandwich with LCMO, the transition temperature of the YBCO decreased, and the decrease was greater the thinner the researchers made the YBCO layers in comparison to the LCMO. Bernhard Keimer and his colleagues now wanted to find out more details of the interactions between the different layers. They specifically wanted to determine how the electronic processes in a layer - the superconductivity on the one hand, and the magnetism on the other - affect the vibrations of the atoms in this layer. Physicists call the interaction electron-phonon coupling, where phonon stands for vibration.
The coupling between electrons and vibrations affects material properties
An illustrative description of the mechanism is that the electrons act like springs between the atoms. The state the electrons adopt affects the springiness of the springs and thus their ability to couple vibrations. The electron-phonon coupling is the basis of a few useful material properties. They include the ability of some materials to convert a temperature difference into a voltage, and also conventional superconductivity, where it is the vibrations of the crystal lattice and not the magnetism that bonds the Cooper pairs together. The researchers have investigated the electron-phonon coupling by observing selected vibrations with a Raman spectrometer as they cooled the material sandwich until magnetic order appeared in the LCMO and superconductivity in the YBCO.
According to the measurements made by the researchers in Stuttgart, one vibration of the copper oxide group in the YBCO layer changed its frequency when the superconductivity set in at the transition temperature. One vibration of the manganese oxide group in the LCMO layer reacted in the same way when the ferromagnetic order formed in the material. "This didn't really surprise us," said Bernhard Keimer. "But we didn't expect that the superconductivity would also affect the vibration of the manganese oxide."
The electron-phonon coupling therefore also makes itself felt across material boundaries, and this occurs not only right on the boundary between the two substances, but in the whole LCMO layer. This is unexpected, because the vibrations deep in the two layers at least are usually as independent as two children playing on adjacent swings. The Stuttgart-based researchers cannot yet completely explain their observations, but they already have some ideas and meanwhile also indications of what could cause the long-range electron-phonon coupling.

One condition for the cross-boundary coupling is that, right on the boundary, the copper and manganese atoms are bound very strongly to each other via an oxygen atom in each case. This bond acts like a rubber band between two swings. Moreover, the copper and manganese atoms can oscillate with the same frequency so that a vibration of the copper atoms can easily drag along the manganese atoms. Just as two children can only swing with the same rhythm if their swings have the same length, i.e. they swing with the same frequency. And assuming that their two swings are connected to each other with a strong rubber band: one child can only pull the other along if both are sitting on swings of the same length.
After all, one child in such a swing tandem requires powerful pushers in order for the other one to swing along. In the same way, the YBCO-LCMO superlattice requires a strong trigger in order for the manganese atoms to react to the vibration of the copper atoms. If this trigger comes from the electrons, more precisely from the nascent superconductivity, the electron-phonon coupling must be strong. The YBCO-LCMO sandwich fulfils this condition as well. "The fact that the effect remains noticeable in the whole LCMO layer as well is possibly again caused by the charge density waves in the YBCO," explains Bernhard Keimer. "In our current experiments we have also already found indications that the sandwich structure stabilises this competing order."
The long-range electron-phonon coupling in the LCMO-YBCO superlattice is not helpful in driving up the temperature at which the high-temperature superconductor loses its resistance. "But it gives us the opportunity to influence other properties such as thermoelectricity or conventional superconductivity," explains Bernhard Keimer. And it increases the understanding of how magnetic and superconducting materials influence each other. This in turn brings the researchers in Stuttgart further towards their ultimate goal: to develop superconductors that can transport electricity in an energy efficient way from wind farms and solar parks to the consumer.
