Facebook joins us to battle the bullies

THE Irish Sun?s drive to kick cruel tormentors off the web has just been ?liked? ? by the world?s biggest social networking site.

Facebook yesterday threw its weight behind our Delete Cyber Bullies campaign, warning the trolls of its tough zero tolerance attitude to abuse.

The online giant?s Ireland and UK policy chief, Simon Milner, insisted that together we can change people?s attitudes to harassment for good.

He said: ?We believe in creating a culture of accountability on Facebook where people report bullying and stand up for each other.

?That?s why we support the Irish Sun?s Delete Cyber Bullies campaign ? together we can help to stop bullying, whether it takes place in the playground or online.?

In recent months two schoolgirls ? 13-year-old Erin Gallagher and Ciara Pugsley, 15 ? have taken their own lives over anonymous hate messages posted on the same Latvian-based website.

Yesterday, Milner urged Facebook users who are subjected to online taunts to report the trolls to his web police immediately.

He said: ?No one should ever be bullied on Facebook ? and if they are, they can use our simple reporting tools to stop it fast. It?s something we are absolutely adamant about in terms of what?s acceptable on Facebook and what?s not.

?We also have a real name rule so you have to be yourself on Facebook.

?We think that really helps people to behave properly because you know who you?re dealing with.?

In the past week Facebook teamed up with a leading UK kid?s charity to protect vulnerable youngsters from online abuse.

The Facebook Step Up: Stop Bullying app was released as ChildLine revealed it gets an average 87 calls a day from young bully victims.

Last night Margie Roe, manager of Childline.ie in Ireland, told how she ?applauded? our Delete Cyber Bullies campaign.

She said: ?It is only through building public awareness around the impact of bullying that we can, as a society, recognise that bullying can be stopped.?
